Meet Tarik Perryman of IndustryCutz in Carson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tarik Perryman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was a kid I always found myself searching for a barber that was able to make my haircut stand out. I went to almost every barber in the neighborhood and I waited countless hours. Then the haircut was never worth the money or the wait!

I started cutting myself at 13 years old. Nobody trusted me back then, ahahaha I went bald a few times but practice makes perfect right?? Fast forward to 5 years later graduating high school in 2006, I had a full operation ran out of my parent’s garage.

Shortly after, I knew that barbering was the trade I was going to turn into my career. I started barber school during the process and I would be in school Monday – Wednesday, cut my clients Thursday- Saturday. It was running smooth, then I got a letter from state board of barbering. Somebody told on me for cutting hair at the house. Left with confusion trying to figure out my next move. I went to barbershops asking if I can start as an apprentice. There was one shop that took me in (BROWNS BARBERSHOP) and that’s where I started in 2011. I tried to transfer my hours from barber school but they didn’t count towards the apprenticeship program. I had no choice but to drop out of barber school and move forward with the apprenticeship program to make sure I was able to maintain my clientele base.

Fast forward to six years later, I signed the lease to open my first location INDUSTRYCUTZ. I named it INDUSTRYCUTZ so whoever is in need for an industry look they can come get fresh. I make sure all my barbers are at their best! I believe iron sharpens iron and my team and I stand by that. Come experience that INDUSTRYCUT we’re open seven days a week to accommodate everybody’s needs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Challenges come with championships! The road is uncertain when you don’t know where you’ll end up. Failure teaches lessons through the process and it’s nothing left but to progress. It’s been a lot of struggles along the way. With no mentor and being the first in my family to run a business. I had no experience what the business world was like, so I took a chance and decided to navigate and figure it out on my own.

I was supposed to be open by Sept 2017 however the Landlord rejected my plans and told me I needed an engineer to draw up floor, electrical and plumbing plans to ensure proper measurements to accommodate the workspace. I wasn’t able to find an engineer to draw all the plans until late August. We submitted the plans September during the time I had to start paying on the location. Plans got approved mid-October. At this point, I was left with no guidance, no money nothing but faith. Working countless hours with two kids and my wife was pregnant at the time! It was a lot to handle working at the barbershop from 7am-10pm then working on the new location from 11pm – 4am everyday. Nobody said it’ll be easy but I didn’t let anything hold me back.

I opened up Feb 1st, 2018, my second year anniversary just passed. I’m still learning as I grow but I’ll tell you one thing, Whoever is trying to start up a business, don’t let anything or anyone bring you down. Stay focused, never panic and keep working! Watch out for the next Industrycutz coming to a city near you !!
