Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Griffin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in Los Angeles Baldwin Hills to be exact the youngest of three girls My mother would often take me to open houses and local museums to pass time and keep me occupied in between my sister’s activities. I grew to appreciate and love art, architecture and home design. I began to realize how it made me feel walking into these very beautiful homes that were completely different then what I saw every day in my neighborhood.
I was intrigued to know who came up with the designs and the reason behind the combination of color, textures and lighting, and it became an absolute must to see what the bathrooms look like in the many hotels and restaurants we would dine in. It was quite easy for me to pick the major in college, especially after witnessing the devastation of the 1992 riots and personally seeing my parents store destroyed. I knew I wanted to be involved in design somehow to beautify the community. With that I decided to become an Interior designer so I could work closely with architects to beautify the community.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The two biggest challenges I faced were 1. Understanding my own value in a world that didn’t look like me. In 1996 when I started on the career path, I often was the only African American and or youngest female in meetings and jobsites. I had to work hard to be taken seriously. The other Obstacle I faced was learning that my community I wanted to serve wasn’t ready for me. It was unheard of hiring an interior design in South LA and surrounding areas and the community wasn’t given the funding to rebuild till many years later
Lotus Designs LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Lotus Designs is an interior design and home staging company based in Los Angeles. We specialize in kitchen and bathroom renovations as well as home staging for those looking to put their home on the market.
We are known for and often referred because of our easy going and approachable concepts that take the stress out of renovating (we save our clients time and money). Our clients range from corporate executives, to single entrepreneurs between the ages of 35-70 to our Athletes (NBA & NFL) Our clients are extremely busy so love that we can identify what speaks to their soul so they can rejuvenate, relax and thrive in their personal environment.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success by how many lives I’m able to touch in a positive way including that of my children. My true Passion is mentoring young designers through the Lotus Design Academy as well as individuals looking to come into their own identity and find their purpose.
As they say, people don’t care about how much you know until they really know you care and I truly love being a resource for individuals and businesses, that is why I also started a networking brunch (Brunchin’ with the Experts).
