Today we’d like to introduce you to Takuya Sugiyama.
Hi Takuya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Japan
I had always been interested in American movies and wanted to work in the film industry, but when I actually started working at a studio, I found it surprisingly boring.
Since I had always loved drawing, I started thinking that tattooing might be something I could turn into a source of income — and it turned out to be incredibly interesting and enjoyable work.
Since then, I’ve spent over 20 years simply drawing, experimenting, and refining my work — and that’s what has brought me to where I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was never a smooth road, but by simply keeping my head down and continuing to paint, most problems eventually passed me by.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It’s not a bad thing, but these days the tattoo industry has all kinds of styles, and clients are looking for something new or something different from others. Still, I want to keep creating what I believe are the coolest tattoos within the defined framework of Japanese tattooing.
How do you think about luck?
Honestly, I don’t really believe in “luck.” I just try to accept everything as something that happened, and do my best to deal with it without avoiding the effort.
