Today we’d like to introduce you to T Ashanti Mozelle.
T Ashanti, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been interested and involved in the entertainment industry, in front of the camera and behind the scenes, learning and exploring all aspects of the industry… I studied acting at USC School of Theatre and after graduating with a BA, I immediately began auditioning for theatre, television, and film roles. Becoming disenchanted with the same stereotypical roles, I turned my focus to costume design and fashion styling. That is where I fell in love with the idea of character development through design.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Anything you love or are passionate about should challenge you and present obstacles or everyone would do it… being typecast as the gay black sidekick, funnyman got old for me and I wanted more for myself because I was a trained professional and I wanted audiences to have a broader perspective of black Images in the world.
Please tell us more about your art.
I am a creative… an artist… I don’t know that my business focus is one thing… I am trying to change the narrative of black people in America… showing that we can be and are more than the comic relief, thugs, drug dealers, as actors… that we can create sets, costumes, help the development of story through multiple avenues in the industry.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The one big change I am looking forward to is making my mark in the Art Department of the film and television industry… I have realized that there are So few people of color in certain departments of the industry and I want to be an advocate for actualizing the inclusion and development of an industry that represents the world as I see and live in.
