Meet Amy Elizabeth and Michael Hunter of SunnyDay Scoot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Elizabeth and Michael Hunter.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It’s actually a riveting story about love, adventure, growth, change, and ultimately happiness. It’s been a wild ride!

We both grew up on the east coast and if someone told us that one day not only would we live in Los Angeles, but also own a tour company and be a part of LA’s great creative and adventurous landscape; we would never have believed it. That just goes to show that you never know where life will lead you but if you are open, your life can change in the most amazing and unexpected ways possible.

When we met, we were living in separate states; Mike in New York and Amy in Pennsylvania. As if that wasn’t a big enough hurdle; Amy had already been seriously considering moving away from the northeast well before that. We realized from the start that long distance wasn’t going to stand in our way though, because the more we got to know each other the more we could tell we had stumbled upon something special. We are both people who are up for anything as long as it’s positive and fun. As a mother of two boys, Amy has always showed them by example to appreciate each moment and that they have the power to create their own happiness. One of the other things we had in common right off the bat was our love for traveling and adventure. Pretty early on it was clear that we also shared a passion for being creative and had an entrepreneurial spirit. We actually did the long distance relationship for awhile after we met, so at times we would see each other every other week and other times it was once a month. In fact after only seeing each other twice we ended up booking a cruise together! We took a big leap early on and that risk truly paid off.

It turned out to be one of the best trips of our life! Traveling can be one of the biggest tests of strength for any relationship. We’ve all been on a trip with someone that halfway through we start wishing it would end just a few days early. For us, it was the complete opposite. Turns out that we were such great travel buddies that we just didn’t want our first vacation together to end. In addition to having so much time together, we also got to see that sharing the experience of different fun activities can really show you so much more about one another. You start creating wonderful memories and build a much deeper connection. During that trip, we had taken a few excursions including zip-lining, exploring caves, swimming with dolphins & manatees… Oh my goodness the manatees are the most amazing creatures in the world! They are so huge, gentle, and like big puppies. They actually want to cuddle and spend time with you. We loved that!

Over the next few years we continued our long distance relationship, took several more vacations, and fell even more deeply in love. Every time we had a new adventure on one of our trips, we talked about the fact that the people who guided us through these great experiences were actually working. Our vacation was their job. This was the ‘Ah-ha’ moment for us. That definitely planted the seed that we could create an experience for people, something amazing, and that could be our job. We could have happiness giving people a joyful adventure!

Having scooter tours be the adventure that we decided on was mainly Amy’s idea. Figuring out that LA was such a great city to offer it in was Mike’s. With Los Angeles being such a great city that offers the best creative arts, as well as some of the most beautiful landscape, this city was where we decided we would set up shop. From there it was a crazy adventure of making a plan, uprooting our entire lives, and moving across the country from one coast to the other to create our business.

We are a family owned small business so we are very involved in every aspect of the company. Who we are as people is poured into what SunnyDay Scoot is all about. It’s about having fun, getting in touch with your inner child, feeling free, and reminding yourself that life is an adventure!

The best part of running our business is that every day we are meeting so many great people and sharing this exciting activity with them. We have met visitors from all over the world and tons of locals as well who come out and experience LA in our Scoots, which is the most unique and fun way possible. We wear many hats as owners, but still our favorite time is when we get to go out as guides and be part of the adventure. We are an example that if you work hard and are willing to take a chance, that you can change your life, love your job, and make your dreams come true.

Has it been a smooth road?
When there are no rules because it’s a new business, and it’s your business so you are the one creating the rules, there really is a WOW factor. It’s this rare combination of feeling completely overwhelmed without certain structure, yet at the same time feeling amazingly free to create what you want and how you want it without any limits. It’s been super exciting and we are absolutely loving the journey!

Just like anything else in life there are daily challenges, but we see obstacles as just opportunities to learn and to grow. Of course, sometimes that wow factor we mentioned is like, “WOW, didn’t see that coming, what do we do now?” But most of the time it’s like, “WOW, we created an amazing experience for people to go scooting around in fun vehicles in the entertainment capital of the world!” So yes, challenge excepted!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Well we did move 3,000 miles across mountains, valleys, and desserts to get here. 🙂 We relocated our entire lives to Los Angeles in order to open Sunnyday Scoot in this area.

We can only speak for ourselves, but as small business owners we had the challenge of finding an area where we thought our business could thrive, and we had to make sure that same area was also a place where we would be happy to call home.

We chose Los Angeles to start our business because not only is it a great place to vacation, but it’s also an amazing place to live!! Coming from the east coast, we love that LA offers a combination of great weather, diverse and creative people, and natural beauty as we are surrounded by stunning coastal beaches and towering mountains.

In our case, Sunnyday Scoot is an outdoor adventure activity company. Therefore, being in an area where we can operate outside daily all year long was an important deciding factor. LA is known for having a health conscious and active culture. It is home to many adventurous people and locals are always looking for new ways to explore this great city. There is also a thriving travel and tourism industry here. Overall our business is a great fit for the area.

We are loving every day of scooting around and having fun adventures with visitors and locals alike as we grow our business and build our brand.
