Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunny Ba.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was “Made in Taiwan” originally and have lived in Canada, France, England, and the US. My husband & I met in the 7th grade and we’ve been growing up together ever since (I really like him). I was a full-time floral designer until I stumbled into calligraphy when we first moved to Los Angeles in the Fall of 2012 and I haven’t been able to stop lettering since!
Please tell us about your art.
I’ve been a freelance calligrapher/lettering artist for about four years now and get all sorts of work from addressing envelopes and creating event signage on chalkboards & mirrors to logo design and commissioned pieces of quotes/poetry/lyrics for special occasions. I also do certificates for the County of Los Angeles and serve as the Vice President for the Society for Calligraphy here in Southern California, one of the first calligraphy guilds in America.
I feel very lucky that I get to make things for a living – there is something authentic about handwritten words and my hope is that my work will make people feel special and take them back to a person, place or time in their heart.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Take as many in-person classes/workshops as you can afford! I very much agree with the infinite wisdom of Dr. Seuss: “The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!” I wouldn’t be where I am today without the generosity & guidance of the best teacher I could’ve ever asked for, Carrie Imai.
Find your people! Through the Society for Calligraphy, I have made so many great friends who are all lettering nerds just like me and it’s been so fun to learn & grow together.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work was recently exhibited at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, and at Society for Calligraphy’s “Letters California Style” conference in Pomona. I maintain an online portfolio on my website and through my Instagram page. I am always happy to accept commissions so feel free to reach out! 🙂
