Meet Sumohair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sumohair.

Sumohair, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Producing music was on my bucket list but didn’t quite get my self to do it until six years ago. In High School, I played guitar, bass, and keys.. was definitely not an expert but had a good understanding of music theory. Up into after High School, I was still playing music but then moved to New York… Left everything behind and completely stopped playing music. Although I stopped playing music, I never stopped obsessing over it. Six years ago, I really wanted to go to music school and realized it was so expensive, so my next move was to teach my self. I went on YouTube, did some research and learned that there was this software that would enable me to record and produce. I downloaded the software and obsessed over learning how to use it, the first two years I spent seven days a week 8 hours or more a day just trying to understand it. On the 3rd year, I started putting out a track about every two weeks on SoundCloud, but it was mainly for me.. just so that I could document the process of. As time went by, I got better and better and cool things started to happen.

Around the 3rd year I got an invitation from Redbull Music Academy to participate in Bass Camp, they pick 20 music makers in the U.S and fly them out to Nashville, Tennessee for a couple of days of interaction and recording music in their studios. After that, I began to build up my confidence in music making and started to collaborate more and more with artists. I also feel like my credibility began to flourish as time went by. Some of my productions are now being played by Djs in Europe and Latin America and some of my music plays on local independent radio stations. I’ve been able to travel and make some money of music, and although that was never my intention it’s pretty cool to see that happen. Today I’m pretty excited to see a lot of fun things coming my way, I’m looking forward to becoming an asset to the music community in Los Angeles and shining light on up and coming artists.

Has it been a smooth road?
Its never been a smooth road, actually one of the main reasons why I started to make music was because it became somewhat of therapy for me. I used it as tool for me to filter emotions, for some of us artist we create to help us get by. Might sound extremist I know, but honestly art saves lives. I think the difficult part is sometimes dealing with the expectations of your peers, like sometimes having to explain of why it’s so important for you to create even if your not making much money from it. I think some of us are willing to risk financial stability, safety and comfort just to see how far our art can go and no, it’s not an easy road… but there’s a strong conviction to create and make a difference.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I produce music. I’m more known for the kind of music that I produce, which is World Music Electronica and that is what I specialize in. I think what can possibly set me apart from others is the creative process in which I record, arrange and master music. I believe I have a creative mind, a strong conviction and a good set of ears.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Los Angeles is full of energy and creative people, I honestly feel that our city has one of the best music scenes in the world. What I like the least about our city is the sense of pretentiousness that it has.
