Meet Summer Woods

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Woods.

Hi Summer, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As kind of a nerdy kid growing up in San Bernardino County, I was very inspired by the video games I loved and the celebrity crushes I had, which inspired odes of love and adventure in my young mind. Once my parents showed me how to play my first chords on guitar and piano, I was off and running, teaching myself anything else I needed to know. Thankfully, they’ve always been so supportive of what I do creatively.

The genre-hopping flavor of Beck’s music, the classic songwriting of The Beatles, as well as the explosive creativity of a band called Ween inspired my own songwriting so much. (I was in love with all these guys as well, and they got a few love songs out of me…) When I decided to create a piano medley of my favorite music by Ween, their guitarist Mickey hit me up and told me he loved it! This started another one of my passions: making medleys of a particular artist’s body of work, which I’m also known for on YouTube.

As well as singing in cover bands and doing my own solo gigs, I’ve continued to gain fans through some pretty random circumstances: I performed live with The Office’s Creed Bratton at The Coach House, my hero “Weird Al” Yankovic retweeted one of my medleys and told me I did a great job, and many fans of a YouTube channel called RedLetterMedia found me through a music video I directed that’s nothing but RedLetterMedia references. I’m so thankful to have had such crazy opportunities like that and I can’t wait to see where I go from here!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been very lucky; the road so far has been pretty smooth. The only real struggles I’ve had to deal with have been romantic ones…and thankfully, those tend to make pretty good songs!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Primarily, I am one of those singer/songwriter/artist things. My specialty is autobiographical songs with specific and quirky lyrics, but I also like to write songs based on fictional stories in video games or books on occasion. I am known for my original songs as well as the covers and medleys of my favorite artists that I do on YouTube.

I’m proud of the fact that I always throw my heart into every project and try to give 100% with anything I’m making. This is how I was able to achieve something else I’m very proud of: a bachelor’s degree in songwriting/composition from Los Angeles College of Music.

As for what makes me unique, my songs are typically 100% autobiographical so they contain lyrics that you couldn’t get from any other artist because they’re actual things that I’ve experienced, and my songs based on other works can also have two meanings depending on if you take them at face value or not. For example, my song “Shakin’” is a true story about a time when I trying to tell if my crush was texting his girlfriend or his mom…and “Golden Flowers” is about my favorite game, Undertale, but it’s also a general tale about forgiveness. My medleys are also something that makes me unique since I arrange songs in a way no one’s ever heard before.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Another one of my many talents includes hula hooping. I dare anyone to go head-to-head with me in a hula-hooping contest. You will be sorry.
