Today we’d like to introduce you to Subhadra – Sandra Griffiths
Hi Subhadra – Sandra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Jamaica and migrated to Mount Vernon, New York, at the age of 15 to join my parents, who had left Jamaica in pursuit of a better life. In 1994, I made a bold decision to leave my corporate banking job and became an exotic dancer, determined to be a hands-on parent to my daughter. My journey took me from New York to Atlanta and eventually to California.
In Los Angeles, I discovered yoga while dancing and began studying television production in 1995. Yoga opened my mind to new possibilities, and I focused my final project on its benefits, producing a talk show format that earned me an A. My passion for yoga grew, and I started teaching 12 classes per week across Los Angeles.
Three years later, I opened my first yoga studio and began teaching in schools, creating a children’s performance group called Yoga Angels. At that time, yoga was relatively new for kids, and we were trailblazers, fusing yoga with music, drums, and didgeridoo. Our engaging performances showcased the strength and flexibility of the children, with my daughter being a key performer.
We made appearances at various events, including the Yoga Journal Conference and Iyengar Odyssey, and created a DVD of children teaching yoga, which we have now transferred to digital format. It has been heartwarming to reconnect with the original Yoga Angels, now adults, and hear how yoga has impacted their lives and careers.
Today, Yoga Angels has evolved into an international wellness company based in Los Angeles, with certified teachers around the globe. We have expanded our reach to Jamaica, Africa, England, Switzerland, Panama, and the Republic of Georgia, continuously developing innovative programs worldwide. Our recent pivot to an online platform includes hybrid and in-person offerings.
We recently showcased our innovative Yoga and Reggae wellness programs at Bhakti Fest in Joshua Tree, California. Our cohort of knowledgeable teachers is diversifying our unique methodology for both adults and children. Yoga Angels’ teacher training is unparalleled, and we are proud to share our yoga and mindfulness programs with institutions such as USAID, OAS, the United Nations, and the City of Beverly Hills schools, as well as in hotels and the financial sector, where we design and implement staff wellness programs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
**Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?**
The journey of entrepreneurship has been one of the most challenging paths I could have imagined. It has been so demanding that I felt compelled to write a book and am currently working on a television series about my experiences. If I had known how tough it would be, I might have hesitated to start, and there have been many moments when I considered giving up and trying something else. However, I have learned that a winner never quits, and a quitter never wins—this mantra has guided me throughout my life.
Additionally, I live by the principle: “Good, better, best; never let it rest until your good is better, and your better is best.” Not only do I embrace these mantras wholeheartedly, but I also share them with others to inspire perseverance.
Despite the struggles, each milestone we achieve brings recognition, which is incredibly encouraging. Our feature in Forbes was a significant highlight, and we are grateful for the acknowledgment. The wellness industry is expanding, and we are prepared to take on more contracts to deliver programs for both children and adults. Yoga Angels International is here to serve, and we will continue to do so with courage and determination.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am comfortable with taking risks, as my life circumstances have required me to embrace them. Throughout my journey, courage has been my guiding principle, and I credit my success to my bravery. I have always focused on perseverance and maintaining a positive outlook, recognizing golden opportunities in every situation.
For me, risk-taking is rooted in my faith and trust in the divine flow of life. I believe that what is destined for us is already waiting to be embraced. Taking risks opens the door to magic and reveals inconceivable possibilities, stimulating our imagination and creativity.
While I have faced significant risks in my endeavors, I view them as essential components of growth and discovery. Embracing risk allows us to transcend limitations and explore new horizons, ultimately leading to fulfillment and success.
