Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendrick Clevór.
Kendrick, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to California in 2012 from Cleveland, OH to pursue my career as a multi-entertainer in the entertainment industry. Since then I’ve had the chance to work with artists Iggy Azalea, Keke Palmer, Tarralyn Ramsey, Tyga, Meek Mill, Jennifer Hudson, Roberta Flack, Hayley Kiyoko and more. I’ve performed at the BET Awards, World of Dance, choreographed for the LA Sparks Dance Team, performed and choreographed for Music Videos & more.
Also before opening STUDIO 216, I taught every week at Hollywood’s top dance studio IDA Hollywood and there I created my very own class “TRAP GROOVES”, where I was known to many as “Trap Daddy”. I’ve taught at different studios throughout LA including Debbie Reynolds, LYTE Dance Studio, Zulu Dance Foundation, CAL ARTS, and more. I’m the creator, producer, and one of the host of LA’s newest hit dance showcase called “Friday Night RAW” where we showcase the hottest up and coming talent in the community.
So with all of this going on, I needed a place of my own to not only house all of the creative ideas & projects I had… but to also expose the LA community to more diverse classes, and to have a go to facility for any artist to hone their skills no matter what it was. I wanted a space to rehearse when I want, and to perform when I wanted. I also wanted a space to officially call home for our independent Record Label & Publishing Company “Predominant Records”.
So, I called my brother (Kendale King) who at the time was an accountant living in Florida. I told him of my ideas to open up a studio out here in California… (My family has always been a big part of my journey, they’ve been there every step of the way) He listened to every word and then told me some of his ideas he had that he wanted to pursue as well with the studio and decided that it was a great idea to get the family business started. We locked down the building months later! My brother decided to officially move to California a couple of months after that.. to help the business and to also help build on our ideas for our new and now established Record Label “Predominant Records”.
And now we’re here 🙂
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a completely smooth ride, but what’s life without a few road bumps? I can definitely say it’s been a learning experience for sure. We’ve learned and grown so much through all of our experiences thus far.
We purposely moved to an area where we saw there was a NEED for what we had to offer. But to connect with a community that we had no prior connections with has been one of our biggest obstacles. We’re trying to spread the word the best way we can to let people know that we’re right down the street and we offer so much.
Please tell us about Studio 216.
STUDIO 216 is LA’s Newest MULTI-PURPOSE FACILITY, located in the heart of SUNLAND-TUJUNGA! We offer WEEKLY DANCE classes, Photo & Video Shoots, personal REHEARSAL SPACE, LIVE EVENTS and more!
We currently are most known for our dance classes and event space rentals. We have a beautiful 2200 sf building and people are always impressed when they walk in our doors.
The atmosphere is completely different. The “216” is our name is the area code for Cleveland. STUDIO 216! This studio isn’t like the traditional commercial studio that you normally see in LA. We wanted to bring those real down to earth Cleveland vibes in the building and offer quality work at an affordable price. I’m proud of that. We offer real training for all levels, and diverse classes like Afro Contemporary, Meditation, Trap Grooves, Twerk Fit and more! I’m proud of that. We have an AMAZING group of loyal teachers that have stuck with us from the beginning. I’m proud of that.
We are a BLACK OWNED BUSINESS! I’m proud of that. That also sets us apart from the others, and what you normally see in California and in this industry.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely nothing. If I hadn’t gone through the things that I went through then I wouldn’t be where I am now! Full of knowledge and ready to take on the next phase! I love being a business owner!
