Meet Christy Cham of Stone Red in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Cham.

Christy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My fascination and love for costume design started at a very young age. I was always so enamored with the way clothing translated a feeling and told a story to the viewers on screen. At Otis College of Art & Design, I was able to learn the vast tactile and academic fundamentals that have allowed me to ease authentically through period and genre in my work.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest struggle has been the competitive nature of the industry. I was admitted into the costume union at 21. I have been fortunate enough to be the Assistant Costume Designer to my mentor, Jacqueline West. Jacqueline is a visionary and one of the most sought after costume designers in the world. Our three upcoming projects are Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’, Disney’s live-action ‘Peter Pan’, and the upcoming Scorsese film, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At the end of this year, I am launching my line of the best fitting t-shirts for women, Stone Red. Coming from a world of costume design in the film industry, I have a meticulous eye for detail and the way clothes fit. It’s my job to know what will look great on camera, but also what will be comfortable for the actors. And it was impossible to find a t-shirt that complimented a range of body types with a soft, amazing fabric. So I decided to design one! My goal with this line is to provide the perfect basic to make every women feel beautiful and confident in a plain white tee.

If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
I don’t think there’s anything I would go back and change. I’m still young, especially in my industry. I believe everything happens for a reason; some of my most difficult struggles were often blessings in disguise.
