Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Nedd.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Steve. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started off detailing my own car, when I turned 18 in 2013 my mom gave me her 04 Dodge Durango. I detailed that car every week. It was very soothing and relaxing and a great way to past the time. Fast forward to 2015 when I bought my 4th car, 09 Nissan Altima Coupe, and I was obsessed with it. I wanted to keep it nice and shiny so I started learning about sealants and waxes and so forth. I only had that car for a year until I bought car number 5 which was a beautiful 2010 BMW 535i in Platinum Bronze (Tan). At this point I was a little more advanced with my detailing knowledge and it showed because the 535i was always turning heads. The 535i was also the most powerful car I had owned, which led to some street racing here and there but also led me to a holding cell. In March of 2016 I was arrested for doing donuts in a public intersection and it turned my whole world upside down. At that point in my life I realized I needed change, but I didn’t want to erase cars from my life. So I turned a negative into a positive and created a business that revolves around my passion. I genuinely love detailing cars and being around cars, so I guess I could say that everything happens for a reason.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Success will never be a smooth road. I’m still on the way to success but I’ve had my fair share of struggles so far. I have been detailing out of my garage so I have had people who were uncomfortable with that. Trying to balance a regular 9 to 5 while building my business had to be the biggest challenge of them all. I’ve missed out on numerous clients due to scheduling conflicts. Besides these two challenges the only others that I’ve experienced were just a part of the learning experience, learning what to do and what not to do on specific cars, what works with some cars, what works with others. I make it sound like it’s not that bad but it has not been easy.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Black Tie Detailing – what should we know?
Black Tie Detailing is an automotive detail business. We specialize in paint correction and paint protection. We work with a lot of late model Mustangs and BMW’s but are currently broadening our horizon to a wider variety of cars. As a company, we pride ourselves on offering quality details at affordable prices. We are not the “$40 detail” guys but we aren’t charging an arm and a leg either. Our work speaks for itself and it speaks pretty loudly.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being genuine is extremely important to my success. I don’t sugar coat anything and I don’t give people things they don’t need to make more money off of them. I also have an inviting personality so it’s easy for me to communicate with people.
