Meet Steve Glenn of Plant Prefab in Rialto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Glenn.

Steve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I wanted to be an architect. I got to college and got into technology — I co-founded a software company that we later sold to Apple — but I still thought I might go into architecture, so I did a summer design program and concluded, there, that I had neither the talent nor temperament for architecture. I learned about developers — and one in particular, Jim Rouse — who helped me to appreciate that if you really care about the quality of the built environment, developers are actually more important than architects, because they control land and budget — and therefore the agenda about what gets built, where and how. So I concluded that I should become a developer someday. So after a career in tech — mostly at startups — I decided in the early 2000s to start LivingHomes, a design and development company focused on building homes for consumers like me who really value design, health and sustainability.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Several:
1. Starting the company a year and change before the worst real estate downturn since the great depression.
2. Building modern, LEED Platinum level prefabricated homes.
3. Building those prefabricated homes at factories that normally build mobile homes or cheap classrooms.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Plant Prefab – what should we know?
We manufacture custom single and multifamily homes that are high-quality, sustainable, healthy, and durable. We empower individuals, architects, and small developers who want to build their own projects – and who want an efficient and reliable solution for the homes they design and want built. And peace of mind during the process. We work with your architects on custom designs or customers can work with our Design Partners or select Standard Homes they have created for us.

We are the first home factory in the nation dedicated to sustainable construction, materials, processes, and operations. We believe homes can and should be built in ways that minimize their negative impact on energy, water, resources — and the health of the people who live in our homes and who build them. We know that in-factory construction can be faster, more cost-effective, and more reliable than on-site construction. And we know it saves neighborhoods from months of noise pollution, traffic and disruption.

Plant Prefab was spun out of LivingHomes, a design and development company that’s built dozens of award-winning prefabricated homes, including the nation’s first LEED Platinum home.
