Meet Steve Bray of Steve’s Steakhouse in Catalina Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Bray.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Steve. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Been in the restaurant industry over 40 years since I was a kid . Always liked working in this field. Have done everything from washing dishes, prepping, bussing, waiting, bartender & Managing. Was seeing all my hard work running a restaurant going to another person so decided to open up my own restaurant.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road in this business. Every day in the restaurant business there are challenges given to you from employee problems, to supply issues, including mechanical issues.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Steve’s Steakhouse – what should we know?
Steve’s Steakhouse was started on April fool’s day of 2001 . People said I was a fool to open an upstairs restaurant. I do everything in the restaurant from relieving a cook from the grill to hosting tables in the front. I love bartending & sometimes you can find me dishwashing with headphones on rocking out! We specialize in Omaha steaks, fresh local seafood brought right off the pier in front of the restaurant, with also offering chicken dishes & pasta. The bragging rights are I have had the same employees for Many many years, some of them from the start. These people never leave which makes my restaurant a well-oiled machine! Also we are very proud to have the best ratings on trip advisor for Many years now.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think my success goes to loving my job & meeting people from all over the world every day . I love going to the tables & asking if they are doing good. I also contribute the success of the restaurant of owner on premises at all times. The newest success of my restaurant is from my wife Margaret who is highly talented on renovation. She stripped the entire restaurant this year & brought me into 2017 standard s with everything brand new. From the floors, to the tiled & decorated walls, added windows for brightness & more views of Avalon bay, to the brand new tables & chairs. Just drop dead gorgeous!
