Meet Dea Smith of Sterling Touch Massage Therapy in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dea Smith.

Dea, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 1985, I was introduced to the benefits of massage following a bad car accident and was effectively treated for my injuries using this modality. This success spurred me to study the work and I graduated from the California College of Physical Arts in 1993 with a certificate in Advanced Massage Therapy and have been practicing since then. I am always taking continuing education classes and adding that information to the massage that I create just for the individual client. I hold a Long Beach license and certificates in Massage Therapy from the California Massage Therapy Council. I have taught massage therapy in various schools and have given seminars in Lymph Drainage and Baby Massage.

I go to my office looking forward to working with my group of clients/friends and I love it when they look at me and say that they feel so much better.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth road when one is making the effort to accumulate a number of clients.

How to present yourself is key. Advertising is difficult and learning to market to the people whom you want as clients is crucial. Along the way, dealing with the different licensing requirements in each city can be challenging.

Please tell us about Sterling Touch Massage Therapy.
The mission statement for my business: is to form a partnership in healing with each individual. I have a number of modalities that I utilize in my work and every massage is specifically created for the needs of the client. I specialize in Lymphatic Drainage, Trigger Point Therapy and Facilitated Stretching and I combine those techniques with Swedish Massage. I’m known for my results which put the client in a better place, physically, as well as emotionally and mentally. I’m most proud of the fact that I am still in practice after twenty-five years – the word is that eighty percent of massage therapists are no longer working in that field five years after beginning practice. What sets me apart is my experience and the fact that I listen to the client and their body and act accordingly.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have reviewed a number of different cities business license requirements.

Pricing:

  • I charge seventy-five dollars an hour, no matter what modality I use.
