Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Vasquez.
Hi Stephen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a filmmaker ten years ago. I created a documentary film, ‘The Electro Wars’ and that became my gateway, portal into the world of Electronic Dance Music. When that film made its rounds in different film festivals around the world, I caught the attention of a young Sonny Moore at the time and he reached out regarding a new project he was about to embark on. We met in NYC and he told me about his Skrillex alias and he played his first EP for me. I was instantly hooked! We became friends and I began documenting his journey as an artist. I toured the world with him for two years and learned a lot by his side, I carry all the knowledge and wisdom I gained on tour with me till this day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing about being an artist is smooth. Even if you’re handed the keys to the kingdom, I’m sure you’ll encounter some sort of personal hurdles once you’ve attained any level of fame or attention. I think the biggest struggle for me has been constantly reinventing myself as an artist. The music scene can be very fickle sometimes and in order to ensure some sort of relevance, you need to constantly stay on top of emerging trends and new sounds.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a filmmaker, writer, editor, music producer and DJ. I am proud of the music videos I have directed that have amassed over 300 million views collectively. I am extremely produced of my feature film, ‘The Electro Wars’ which was the first film of its kind chronicling the rise of Electronic Dance Music in America circa 2009. I always try to be a forward thinker when it comes to my approach in any form of art I choose to create. I’m all about genre-bending in music and pushing new sounds. There’s no point in joining the rest of the herd.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Creating art makes me happy.
