Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Lind.
Hi Stephen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career by essentially being a “stan” before that was even a term. I had always wanted to dive into music and acting but due to my parent’s financial limitations, I was forced to search for other creative outlets. After years of begging, I got my first PC and taught myself web development and graphic design. From there, I began creating fansites for just about any female entertainer who I could see a piece of myself in. The most successful website was for actress Jessica Biel. Eventually, I was working with production companies to help create promotional materials for her films, going to screenings and being exposed to the world I was dying to be a part of. After years of lying to myself, saying “This is not for me,” I finally got the courage to be honest and admit it’s actually all I want. I linked up with my hometown (Tucson, AZ) childhood friend, Taylor Sparks, and began writing and recording music. I have spent the last few years taking vocal lessons, expanding my taste in music and getting to know a version of myself that I’ve been eager to meet. I released my EP “Lovers’ Roulette” in October 2022 and shortly after tied in another passion, film. I produced a short film-style music video that was visually inspired by films like Blade, Interview with a Vampire and The Tall Man. The film has been doing quite well in European Festivals, winning “Best Music Video” at Paradise Film Festival, Feel The Reel International Film Festival, Brazil New Visions International Film Festival and Bright International Festival. We make our American debut at the Transparent Film Festival out of New York City in April 2023.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first read this question, I wanted to complain about how difficult it can be because it’s overwhelming. But I’ve been very fortunate. My exposure to the entertainment industry through my web work has allowed me to present myself as a professional and someone who knows “how” to work in the industry, which isn’t an aspect talked about very often. So, I opened some doors without knowing that’s what I was doing. With that said, “Hollywood” is full of people who are ready and willing to take advantage of independent artists. The amount of scammers out there is wild, it’s easy to get lost when you’re navigating a terrain you’re unfamiliar with. You reach out for help, and the first hand that presents itself is not always the one who is going to save you; they might be the one who tries to pull you under.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My current focus is on both music and film. I have an attachment to both art forms and am eager to find my place in both worlds. I am most proud of my EP and Short film, “Lovers’ Roulette.” I believe I created an incredibly fun gay-horror-pop dance record that is an escape as much as it is a reflection of how quick you can get lost in love. The short film is doing really well in European Film Festivals and that is more than a dream come true. I have never been a fan of the question “What sets you apart from others” because it screams, “I’m not like other girls.” What I am trying to bring to the table is simply another option. For reference, when I was younger, I knew I wasn’t traditionally attractive so while I love Britney Spears, she’s not a “me.” When Ashlee Simpson debuted, I immediately connected with her because she served the same level of fun and confidence but did it in a way where I could see myself. I want to provide that to someone.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
While I have quite a few, I had a really fun childhood, the one that comes to mind is playing The Sims on Gamecube while listening to Kelly Clarksons’ “Breakaway” with my best friend; except track 7. Never track 7.
