Meet Stacey Sewell of Stacey Sewell Designs in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacey Sewell.

Stacey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out 15 years ago in Brooklyn NY. I owned a business in the service industry but always had a passion for hospitality and entertaining other in my home. event planning and floral design became a natural fit for me. I became so enamored with the idea of creating something beautiful and classy no matter what the budget. I began to volunteer as a helper at events so I could learn my new craft. I loved it and everything about floral design, so I worked hard at it and became good at it in the eyes of others. As I grew in my floral artistry people started to ask me to work with their events as a floral designer. I focused on weddings and small to mid-size events in the NYC area. I enjoyed doing lots of interesting weddings and having my flowers featured at a spa. Later on, I caught the bug for event planning when I realized that many of the same skills I utilized for floral designing were used for event planning as well. A good amount of my business come from referral’s from satisfied customers. After I moved to the West Coast, my business flourished even more as I took on projects of all sizes and shapes. My passion focused on the fact that each person throwing an event big or small deserves the best event possible, no matter what the budget may be. The main thing for me is the intersection of creativity and client confidence. I love seeing my clients’ vision come into real life with style and excellence and their happy reactions. Being a self-taught planner and designer, I loved to read, attend events and keep up with the latest event fashions and trends from the very beginning. I believe that enjoying artistry around me is the source of my inspiration as an artist. I would take pictures of floral pieces or event spaces and recreate them in my home over and over until I could make my space or piece look like the pictures I was recreating. Soon enough, inspiration and perspiration combined! I was able to think up new event and floral designs on my own and could execute designs for others. One of my favorite things to do is to sit down with a client, listen to their vision and help them bring it into the world for all to enjoy. Eventually, the events and pieces that I was commissioned to do required help, so I’ve also received a lot of satisfaction in working with other creative professionals to see the larger visions come to life. A big part of my work is connecting with my clients as a way of connecting with my community. I love it that I can help my community by using my events planning expertise. Over the years, I started to focus on using my events planning skills to connect with worthy causes and people who have something meaningful to share, I had the pleasure of being the volunteer coordinator for a tennis event that was sponsored by Chase that benefited The First Break Tennis Academy, whose mission is to give kids the opportunity to excel in tennis and education.

I feel fulfilled as an artist and an entrepreneur when I provide a high-quality, highly creative experience for charity that benefits my community.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m not going to lie. I face the same challenges other entrepreneurs do: too much work followed by not enough work, creative block, getting the help that you need in terms of staff. I love what I do, so I don’t mind the challenges. The main thing is still the main thing: creating successful events and designs of all types is my passion, and happy clients are the reward of a job well done.

What is the proudest moment in your career so far?
One of the proudest moment of my career was when a wedding I did last year featured on a major wedding blog. That was a very thrilling feeling to be recognized for you’re a job well done. Another proud moment was when I got a chance to volunteer alongside my kids at Chase Return the Serve. It is a yearly tennis event sponsored by Chase to support The first Break Academy ,their mission is to help kids excel in tennis and education.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc.?
The events industry has benefited greatly from technology advances in the last 10 years just as most other industries have. It’s great to see my clients empowered with so much information at the start of the planning process. All visuals available via online storyboards and social media feed the initial vision and help us to zone in on what we like quicker. Also, the ability to collaborate with people online accelerates the overall creative process. I believe that the event industry will continue to use technology to support the creative process as it augments the personal touch.
