Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Mills.
Nancy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi Everybody!
I’m Nancy Mills – a women’s empowerment leader, energy artist, inspirational writer and a builder of community. Recently I started painting at 70. My philosophy on life is that “there is no age limit on self-expression.”
Twenty years ago, while in my early fifties, I founded Spirited Woman, a leading women’s empowerment community that has come to embrace and inspire 1000’s of women worldwide.
My mission is to help heal and support women through actions of empowerment. I do this through my art, writing, foundation and by celebrating every woman visionaries.
One of my latest projects is PAINTED PRAYERS, a collection of my energy artwork expressed through original art and notecards. Each PAINTED PRAYER is a symbol of spirit, empowerment and beauty. It is my way of sending prayers out into the world.
I believe “It is essential for EVERY WOMAN’s voice to be heard.”
Currently, I live in Playa Vista, California on land that once was an Indian Burial Ground.
I’ve led quite the life! It truly has been a Spirited Woman’s journey.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been many bumps along the way. From emotional to financial to health-related. Yet, instead of weakening my persistence to move forward, the challenges have made me even more determined to keep going. Also, I believe it is essential to listen to your inner voice. If it is time to stop something, stop. Do not push through mud. And if it is time to let your passion fly, fly.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Through the years Spirited Woman has become a leading international women’s empowerment community.
Known for “women inspiring women,” 1000s of women have become involved – either in the past through our workshops, our “Spirited Woman Directory,” our Sisterhood of the Sacred Scarves, our Spirited Woman Top 12 Pick Lists – or currently through our flourishing social media presence, our Spirited Woman Circles and our supportive Zoom calls.
Our Top 12 Pick List logo is recognized around the world and is a symbol of recognition for inspiring and supporting other women and the books written by them.
Spirited Woman is also known for giving back, which is close to my heart. In 2012, I created the Spirited Woman Foundation. Its mission is “To help heal and support women through actions of empowerment.”
Through our Sisterhood of the Sacred Scarves Project, over 4,000 Spirited Woman Prayer Scarves were sold to over 1,000 women internationally, and more than $20,000 was distributed to 18 non-profits.
Now, the majority of our foundation proceeds come from a percentage of the sale of “Painted Prayers,” a collection of my energy artwork expressed through original art and notecards. Each Painted Prayer is a symbol of spirit, empowerment and beauty.
Thankfully, Spirited Woman continues to grow and flourish.
What were you like growing up?
As the Pisces fish swims in both directions, so did I. A sensitive, gifted, little girl, I loved, just loved to live in my imagination. I can remember at five, I painted the tables, my bedroom wall and more until my genuinely neurotic mother said to me, “no more painting Nancy.” I was traumatized for decades to come. I didn’t paint again until I was 70. That shows you how sensitive I am.
On the other hand, my absolute favorite article of clothing – when I was five – was my Annie Oakley skirt. My skirt was filled with pockets that were filled with guns. I loved that skirt with my life. I ran around the house in my boots, hat and skirt, and when I came upon someone I was mad at – and there were many choices – I whipped out my gun and yelled at the top of my lungs, “Bang, bang you’re dead.”
Ok, so I seemed like trouble. But, let me tell you, I was not. Anything but. I was EMPOWERED. All four-feet-something of me – and I realized that if I put my mind to it, I could do anything. I was UNSTOPPABLE.
Today, I am a combination of both those sides. I am a women’s empowerment leader who is also an energy artist.
