Meet Sophia Gascoigne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Gascoigne.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m from Nuneaton in England and my journey to America started when I was just two years old when my mum took me to my aunties dance school. I soon fell in love with the art and competed in many competitions winning many awards. At the age of 8, I auditioned for the National Youth Ballet of Great Britain and trained with them for two years.

Whilst with NYB (National Youth Ballet), I won the choreography award and my experience inspired me to do this as my career. Soon after, I started singing lessons, and I started to audition for professional theatre and I landed a role at the Curve Theatre, Leicester, England in ‘Gypsy’ the Musical, starring Caroline O’Connor. I knew I wanted to go after my dream even more, and I auditioned for Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, England, where I gained a scholarship and joined the elite school at 13. Having come from a small town, I really thrived on the excitement of living and going to school in a big city. Whilst at Italia Conti, I would watch my favorite choreographers in America on YouTube, and I came across a prestigious school called the AMDA College of the Performing Arts (American Musical and Dramatic Academy) in Hollywood, Los Angeles. I decided that AMDA was where I wanted to go for college after I had finished Italia Conti high school. I saw AMDA was holding a one day audition in London and I knew I had to go.

A few weeks later I was offered a place on their Music Theatre, B.F.A Degree course with a scholarship, starting in October 2016, none of this would be possible without the training I received at Italia Conti. I’m lucky enough to have such supportive parents who helped me move to Hollywood at the age of 17 to start my next chapter. AMDA helped me excel in many ways and I was fortunate enough to even attend their New York campus for a semester. After three years, I graduated with my B.F.A degree at the age of 20, and soon after, I signed with talent manager, Versa Manos, at The Gorgeous Media Group. I’m grateful to be auditioning and working in the industry with success, working towards my aim for the future to stay in America and continue building my experience.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve really enjoyed going to college and living in America, but of course there were some challenges I had to face. Initially, I was very homesick as I was of course not used to living halfway around the world away from my family. I came across some funny obstacles, for example during orientation week we had a fall kickback and the theme was to where a flannel and I remember being very confused as a flannel has a different meaning back home in England, along with many other words I came across! I’ve honestly had a lot of fun on this adventure this far, no matter the obstacles.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in performing arts and something that sets me apart from others is my drive and determination as well as my English accent which my American friends love! In all seriousness, I have a lot of passion for what I do and my desire to achieve my goals in life is something I will consistently work towards. I remember growing up, I would always be called a triple threat and I’m very proud to be labeled as such as I put in a lot of work to stay unique and true to myself.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have a lot of amazing childhood memories, but one of my favorites would be spending quality time with my family, which I am super grateful for now as I don’t get to spend that time with them being so far away. The best memories with my family included eating a traditional English Sunday dinner at my nan and grandad’s house and then we would play a fun game of bingo, and my grandad would always put money in, which made it more exciting!
