Meet Sonny Dumarsais

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonny Dumarsais.

Reynoldson “Sonny” Dumarsais (Due ‘Mar Say) is an accomplished singer/songwriter/producer and musician who came from humble beginnings playing lead guitar for his church. Sonny joined a band of talented musicians from the New Jersey area who were his best friends – they all grew up together in the church. The friends formed a band called “Plan B” and later changed their name to “The Plan Band.” The Plan Band helped Sonny form his signature sound by introducing him to rhythm and blues.

The band then went on to participate in many local and national gigs, including the McDonald’s gospel fest. The trajectory of Sonny’s musical career changed when his family suffered a terrible four-alarm fire that destroyed their home. Sonny lost everything in the fire, including his prized guitar. Down and out, the life-changing experience inspired Sonny to begin writing lyrics and composing songs to express real-life stories of hope. Sonny’s talent as a guitarist allowed him to share the stage with artists he admired such as Angie Stone, Neyo, and Anthony Hamilton, to name a few. Sonny has played in legendary venues such as the Howard Theatre and BB Kings, alongside the likes of Lyfe Jennings and Elle Varner. In the fall of 2016, Sonny joined Jeremiah’s Kall Productions, designed to help young men move to the next level in their musical careers.

Now Sonny has a manager, C. NaTasha Richburg, to support his journey as an artist. In April 2017, Sonny began his solo artist career, which encompassed travel up and down on the East Coast and throughout New York City. As a solo artist, his style of music comprises a mix of hip-hop, R&B, neo-soul, and rock ‘n’ roll immersed in spiritual influences gained as part of his church upbringing. As a young man, Sonny’s baritone vocals are complemented by soulful lyrical interpretations of his lead guitar. On September 26, 2017, Sonny Dumarsais released his first single and video, “Pick Up #TheCall,” 2018 International Music and Entertainment (IMEA) Award for RnB/Soul song of the year. Pick Up #The Call which tells a story of a young man filled with anxiety due to experiencing repeated unanswered calls.

March 9, 2018, is the release date for Sonny’s first EP, ”Transition.” This EP is a reflection of Sonny’s life experiences starting with his major adjustment, moving from musician to solo artist. During this time of transition, Sonny’s girlfriend decided she did not want to continue their relationship. He was immediately faced with writer’s block triggered by an aching heart. Sonny was down and out about the end of his relationship, which made it difficult for him to find words of hope. In time, the miraculous work of Sonny’s faith unplugged his writer’s block, to forge his musical journey forward, which ultimately made his musical sound take root. Thus, the journey of the EP, “Transition,” began.

The EP compilation exposes Sonny’s signature R&B/neo-soul sound, which reflects the heart and soul of his life’s journey. “Transition” has one song in which Sonny expresses feelings of love, hope, and joy, praying his relationship with his girlfriend would last forever. In another song, Sonny articulates his raw feelings of heartache after his girlfriend stopped speaking to him because his musical aspirations caused him to travel and not be home. Sonny uses another song to examine his damaged heart through the eyes of the rearview mirror to witness a love that use to be. November 21st, “Love Changes” the music video premiered to present audiences with Sonny’s artistic expression of the ebbs and flows of a loving relationship. New single “The Truth of the Matter” is scheduled for release Spring 2019.

Sonny longs to inspire audiences to achieve greatness, as he strives to be the voice for those filled with anguish and is seeking songs that express optimism. He desires to speak across generations’ one listening ear at a time. Sonny’s goal is to make music that reflects the times. He also desires to produce music that paints a picture of his life’s experiences that will be recognized by audiences regardless of age. Sonny wants to “Make music that encourages audiences the freedom to feel real emotions.”

Has it been a smooth road?
The road is graced with ebbs and flows. The first major challenge I originally faced in today’s entertainment business was finding a management team who would support my development as a solo artist. Second challenge was finding my musical voice to authentically presents what RnB music means to me. Third major challenge is rising the capital needed to afford a nationwide tour.

Now, I am represented by C. NaTasha Richburg, founder of C. NaTasha Productions. She has helped me evolved from musician to solo artist. We are working as a team to develop and implement a strategy to mitigate the challenges I face as an indie RnB artist.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Sonny Dumarsais is an indie artist represented by C. NaTasha Productions. Working as a full-time lead guitarist which is very fulfilling work. However, I am most proud of my ability to write and perform my own songs. What sets me apart from others is how the “live band” sound compliments my baritone vocals to resonate the essence of vintage RnB with a hip-hop flair.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe LA is a great place to establish roots as an emerging RnB artist. Yes, I would recommend that an artist should start their career in LA. Every visit to LA has elevated my thought processes to help me better understand what it takes to be a successful RnB artist.
