Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherish Alexander.
Cherish, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Dallas, Texas. I’ve always loved to sing; my mother still says I started singing before I started talking. I learned to play piano and wrote my first song when I was seven years old. My mom and I moved to Hollywood shortly after and I was quickly thrust into many aspects of the entertainment business including performing in a kid’s cabaret. It was a very formative time and a perfect place to bloom.
I started playing guitar around 14 and discovered the Beatles. WOW!! When I was 18, I was signed to RCA records & Warner Chappell Music Publishing. This introduced to me a whole new world of songwriting and gave me the opportunity to work with the best songwriters in the business. It also showed me that the songs I was writing could be covered by other artists. (including Tiffany which was a big deal at the time!)
As I grew, I felt I wanted to explore different musical side projects, bands + experience life on the road. Also, during that time I was asked to play lead guitar in a few Cyndi Lauper music videos and had songs featured different films + TV shows which has brought me to where I am today.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been many crossroads in my life. My struggle is no different than any other artist. I made the choice to grow through the ups and downs and kept following my heart. I’m grateful for the direction I’ve chosen and humbled that I didn’t burn any bridges along the way. It has taken me to a whole new level with people I continue to work with. It has given me the confidence to listen to that little voice and inner roadmap inside of me that I know it won’t steer me wrong.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m grateful that songwriting has enabled me to turn bad situations into good not only for myself but for others. There was a song I wrote called “Goodbye” during a very dark time in my life. It was featured in the TV series “The Crow” which had a lot of exposure.
It’s amazing how many people have reached out to share how much that song has touched them and helped them to get through their hard times. To have people cover my song in personal tributes on YouTube to widows contacting me out of major life tragedies was powerful. Just knowing that my songs have touched someone’s soul, has been the most rewarding of all. My challenges the last few years is what has brought me to write my new album “Meet Me Where You Are.”
Writing songs has always been a way for me to express and heal my journey, kind of like therapy and hopefully also helped to ease the journey of a few souls along the way. My main priority at the moment is to write music that makes a difference because I think music is just another way to heal ourselves, and others which in turn heals the world.
My latest album ‘Meet me where you are’ is recently available on vinyl:
What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
At nine years old, I was on Doug Henning’s “World of Magic” (2 part special). It also, included Bruce (Caitlyn) Jenner, Ann Jillian, and Billy Crystal. One of the highlights was meeting Lucille Ball in the halls of NBC. I remember knowing all the magic tricks, but I had to sign a disclosure saying I would never tell. To this day I haven’t.
