Thanks for sharing your story with us Smita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Several years ago, I bought a home ice cream machine on sale – just to have fun with. I created flavors using saffron and other spices and served the ice cream at my private parties. Our guests loved these flavors, which encouraged me to experiment with more unique combinations. One of my friends suggested I sell these to Indian restaurants and the idea of creating a company was born.
Of course, a product created at home is much different than a commercial product and so I had to do plenty of research and find my way into making this into a commercial product.
Eventually, we opened a retail store since the demand was growing and we currently are the only Indian-style ice cream store in the LA area.
We not only sell this product to the retail customer but also wholesale to restaurants, caterers and hotels.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As any business there are plenty of struggles, however the key is to persist through those.
As a creator, you like to focus on the aspect you love – which for me is creating new flavors and perfecting existing ones but running a business has so much more to it, including doing the things that you don’t love as much like managing the books for example.
Maintaining a competitive pricing given multiple price increases from vendors and suppliers is also challenging.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Saffron Spot story. Tell us more about the business.
We are an exotic ice cream manufacturer – making high-quality Indian style exotic ice cream and desserts. We specialize in creating our own flavors and flavor combinations using spices, fruits and nuts. Although infused with Indian spices, our flavors are appealing to all cultures.
We are the only company providing unique Indian style ice cream and desserts in the LA area – through our retail store and on a wholesale basis.
Our unique flavors, combinations and our quality is what sets us apart and constant innovation to make our products better.
