Meet Skylar Zhang

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Zhang. Skylar was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Gabriele Di Sazio.

Skylar, can you walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
years ago. It’s interesting to be back and reflect on where I was then and where I am now.

This year marks my 10th year living and working in LA. As a member of the Motion Picture Editor’s Guild, I’ve had the privilege of working as a freelance editor and VFX editor in Hollywood, working on all kinds of projects from music videos to TV shows, to big blockbuster movies. Along the way, I was so lucky to have many mentors who showed me the way in the industry and brought me up to where I am today. Since our last conversation, I have had the tremendous honor to work on TV series like The Andy Warhol Diaries on Netflix, which was nominated for an Emmy last year, and the comeback film of Nicolas Cage “Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”, as well as the Film Independent film projects “The Words of Cayetano” and “Muro” as a Film Independent “Project Involve” fellow. So I would say it has been a pretty good couple of years for me and I can’t wait for what’s coming next!

Please talk to us about your creative work and career. What should we know?
I have been trying to balance between working on bigger projects and smaller indie projects that really speak to me. I am currently working on the upcoming Netflix film “Rebel Moon” by Zack Snyder in the Visual Effects Editing department. It is such a gratifying experience to get to work on a project of this scale. It is the start of a new sci-fi franchise by the creative mastermind Zack Snyder and reportedly the hight budgeted Netflix film ever. The first film will come out on Netflix on December 22 of this year. So make sure to check it out this Christmas! On the other hand, another film I edited earlier this year “ My Nights Glow Yellow” has just premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It is now playing in selected theaters all over the country before all showtimes of “Joy Ride” from July 7th to July 20th, 2023, and before Blue Beetle from August 18th to August 31st, 2023.

Gabriele Di Sazio has been a great friend to us and I know you’ve got a great relationship as well. Maybe you can tell our audience a bit about Gabriele and your experience with them.
Gabriele is such a talented writer and director. We have been working together for over 5 years now. Gabriele and I met at AFI, where we received our Master’s degrees in Directing and Editing respectively. We collaborated on a few films together in school and really hit it off. With our thesis film “Vincent” premiering at film festivals all over the world and winning many awards, we decided to collaborate again on another project “A Cuore Chiuso” where we went and filmed on location in Gabriele’s hometown of Sicily. It was a passion project for us and especially exciting for me because I was able to be on set with Gabriele as he directed the actors and witness the magic happen while the camera was rolling instead of getting dailies after the fact sitting in the editing room like what editors usually do.

Gabriele and I have a simple way to collaborate. Sometimes it’s just so effortless to communicate when you are with the right person. His sensibility and his way of capturing the beauty and vulnerability of human emotions in the form of filmmaking are what I admire him the most. Unlike many directors who dominate the editing room, Gabriele’s ability to be confident in his material yet receptive to what I bring to the table as an editor is really what makes him the greatest collaborator.

I know Gabriele has multiple feature projects and a TV show in development and I can’t wait to see what he does next and collaborate with him on something great again.
