Meet Sky Lu of Azuria Sky in West LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sky Lu.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started making piano covers of Pokemon town themes as a teenager. Through this process of interpretation, I slowly found myself adding more and more variations until one day, I ended up with a music piece that was completely different from the original song.

I adopted the name Azuria Sky around 2013 when I began making music with more intention. The songs I write make up an emotional journal of sorts and are intertwined with the events in my life. I started making music solely on the Nintendo Gameboy, and then one day I bought a guitar, and then I began to sing, eventually leading to my stylistic identity – lush acoustic sounds accented by simple waveforms and a sincere voice.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think most artists experience difficulty with their art simply due to the fact that art is such a deeply personal expression. I struggled with my identity and how to process my emotions, and this directly affected my musical output. Depression is a beast sometimes.

I also struggled with validity. As a self-taught composer and vocalist, I encountered folks who had more knowledge and credentials than I did, which often made me question the future of my career.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I compose and sing under the name Azuria Sky and currently, most of my time is spent writing and performing toplines (melody and lyrics) for EDM songs. I also compose original tracks for games and do some voice acting here and there.

I am proud of the emotive quality of my work, as well as my unique combination of sounds. I write heart-wrenching lyrics and melodies and have a recognizable voice to carry the message.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me on a day to day basis simply means forward momentum. Depression has taught me to focus on putting one foot in front of the other, and most of the time I am not concerned with specific milestones.

But when I do look up and notice how far I’ve come – it’s such an encouraging thing.

As for career success, there are two things that come to mind. One is being able to sustain myself through creative work alone, and the second is being able to bring my personal projects into existence and share them with the world on an impactful scale.
