Today we’d like to introduce you to Simrah Farrukh.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Simrah. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started photography when I was 15. Throughout my years in high school, I would take photos of my friends, and we’d have photoshoots in our local parks or on trails behind our houses. It wasn’t until college when I finally began to develop a focus and style. I shape my work around South Asian culture in response to the lack of South Asian representation in Western media, art, and fashion.
Has it been a smooth road?
When I first started off, I had always wanted to be a photographer for a certain clothing company that mostly promoted skinny girls with blond hair. It was my dream to be featured on their Instagram and to shoot with the models they posted photos of. I didn’t acknowledge the beautiful women, clothes, and overall culture I had right at home. Learning to embrace my identity as an American-Pakistani definitely was through photography.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I think my photographs are known for being moody. Many people have told me that my photos are nostalgic, comforting, and remind them of home. I am most proud of myself for creating a safe space for South Asians.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I would hope to meet and photograph different faces of the South Asian community, and have their faces be represented in Western fashion and art magazines.
