Today we’d like to introduce you to charming Jessica Brosamle.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started off as mom with a camera. I would get so frustrated that my point and shoot had a delay that would cause me to miss those perfect adorable moments. So I went out and bought my first DSLR camera and set out to learn to use it. I quickly got the bug and needed to learn everything I could about photography. It was all I thought about, learned about, and did for several years. I took countless classes, workshops, online tutorials and a ton of trial and error. I had a strong art and design background and found that it applied to photography seamlessly. My first ever photo shoot of my kids is still my favorite to this day. Before I knew it, my friends were asking me to take pictures of their kids too. It’s been about 11 years since I began this journey and I still try to challenge myself and am constantly learning and evolving as a photographer. Most recently I have branched into Studio Dance photography.
Has it been a smooth road?
Yes and no. Things have really fallen into place for me and I feel very blessed that I have had the opportunity to spend so much time and money to fulfill this dream for myself while raising 2 small children. I started very slowly and I always earned and saved the money with photography to buy my next upgrades and better lenses. Since I picked up my first DSLR camera, I felt like I am meant to be doing this. But it has been a lot of hard work to get here. There have been many years of late nights, spending my days as a full-time mom while my husband was working full time and finishing up college, I was working a part-time job to make ends meet and still relentlessly working on learning photography. There has been a lot of struggle to stay the course and not give up, a lot of pressure to work a full time “regular job” /steady job and earn more money to help support our growing family.
Has there been people or an institution that has played a pivotal role in your career?
My husband has pushed me to follow my dreams and make a career out of my hobby. He has a been a great support through it all. Also, my good friend Kristyn Abbadini has been a great inspiration to my dance photography. We are constantly bouncing ideas off of each other.
What type of clients or projects do you look forward to most?
Recently I partnered with Kristyn Abbadini and Innovation Dance Center for the Preforming Arts in Moorpark, CA to create The Passion Project. We are featuring incredible little dancers from all over and showcasing their love and passion for dance. We are going beyond the standard dance photography and really creating something new and incredible. (images available)
I am also really looking forward to the holiday season. I get to see so many families over 3 months. Some new faces and lots of familiar ones. I am so thankful that my clients chose to come back year after year and I get to see their families grow and I get to capture that.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Honestly, I do not regret the road that led me here. I am incredibly grateful for the lessons that I have learned.
