Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Carney.
Hair wasn’t Sofia first choice in careers. She shared “my first passion was makeup, specifically special effects and film makeup (I like blood!). By my senior year in high school I was already enrolled in cosmetology school and by the summer after high school had ended I was a licensed cosmetologist.”
She started working at salons during the days as an assistant and moonlighting as a freelance makeup artist for indie films her my free time. After a few years of tearing off waxing strips and sweeping salon floors, enough was enough. She decided to move from the bay area down to Los Angeles and enroll in makeup school. Throughout makeup school she maintained a job in a salon until she decided to make the change to full time freelance makeup artist. Although she was doing what she thought she wanted to do, she always missed doing hair, and so she returned.
“From that point on I’ve been continuing a love affair with hair and continuing my education (I recently became a licensed barber). For now my focus continued growth, and building my client base via word of mouth, social media platforms, and one hair cut at a time.”
She has built an incredible career but we her personal story has had many twists and turns.
“Everyone has struggles that they go through to get to be the person they are today, and I am no exception to the rule. I had various trials along the way with my decision to pursue hair over makeup, my sexual identity, my sobriety, and my overall acceptance with myself. All of these things have made me stronger. I’m happy to say that today I am comfortable with who I am, and I’m grateful for the experiences I have. Often times having these experiences make it easier to build lasting relationships with my clients.”
Her life story, her rebel spirit, her dedication to her work and her creativity make her a shining example of what makes LA’s independent community the envy of the world.
