Today we’d like to introduce you to Shu Zhang.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The first natural difference between people is their physical appearance, the difference in the face is the first. The diversity of facial features is a huge attraction to me.
I like facial features that meet the public standard, and I also like faces with unique personality or imperfections. I believe this is the wisdom of the creator, the power of nature. I have a strong interest in art since I was a child, and I graduated from the China Academy of Art.
In my academic career, in addition to designing professional courses, I like going to the film, advertisement classes and be models for their homework. The study of various aspects and the curiosity of different art fields enable me to discover and cultivate my own unique aesthetic of fashion.
Not only do I enjoy a diverse work environment, but I am also passionate about the process of communicating and collaborating with other creative people. Since I have been learning painting since I was a child, I have long been sensitive to art, so I still remember the details when I was modeling.
I found that if makeup artist is lack of understanding the idea of the photoshoot, rough makeup techniques don’t usually lead the best results, so I started to enter the production team. At that time, I was trying my best to make up for the first time on the face of others.
Although I didn’t have any makeup experience, I was not too disappointed with my first work. The feeling is just to transfer the painting from the canvas to the people’s face. I decided to focus on the fashion makeup after graduation, and I choose a makeup school with a world-class authority in the makeup field – Vancouver Film School, and then officially entered the fashion industry.
After a year of study in Vancouver Film School, I was lucky enough to be selected to participate in the IMATS international professional makeup competition, and became the first Chinese contestant to win the championship, and won it again in the following second year. I have been recognized by world-class seniors, which has laid the foundation of my beauty makeup career. I am determined to go further on this road with the skills and artistic concepts I have learned.
Today, I have been working in the market for four years, and I have worked with many international brands and events such as NBA, Oscar, Vivo, Tencent, Touch in Sol, Vogue, and so on. My pursuit of details, in beauty makeup, as well as my passion for fashion aesthetics, drives me to continue to create and regard it as a lifelong career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been to a few cities to live, work and experience such as Los Angeles, Vancouver, Paris, and Shanghai in the last five years, the most struggle part of makeup career is I have to build up a new connection and figure out how to start a career in a new industry where you don’t know anyone.
My experience is to be positive, creative, and keep doing. I have kept building up portfolios so it’s easy for me to get into some fun TFP photoshoot and get to know some creative person. So I kept doing makeup on different models who also want to start.
I enjoy my time seeing different kind models from different counties with darker or lighter skin tone, double eyelid or single eyelid. At the time maybe I’m not earning money but I’m gain experience and improve the skills. Then I will keep getting the images of makeup posted, Sooner or later I would get connected and closer to real jobs.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I specialize in doing fashion makeup as a freelance makeup artist.
I’m known for I can independently design makeup looks inspired by the client’s idea, to match the atmosphere for the whole photoshoot.
I neither want to see the makeup part are too much nor not showing and not related to the product, clothes or models, I’d like to achieve the best balance.
