Meet Shu Chih Murray of Shu Chih Art Studio in Irvine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shu Chih Murray.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shu Chih. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While a Fine Art Major at California State University Long Beach, I began teaching two neighbor children drawing and painting. This reinforced the fundamentals I had studied and brought great satisfaction to me as I as watched children learn about, and appreciate art.

Over the years, I have moved the studio from the dining table in my home to a 2500 square foot studio. This space gives us added opportunity to serve the community and those who are interested in learning more about fine art. We currently have around 200 students enrolled in the studio.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any business, the road has been rocky at times. Initially, we had limited capital but grew quickly with the number of students. The challenge was balancing between current students, growing and investing as we saw the potential need for added space and updating equipment.

Like many professionals, balancing time and energy between family and the studio was a growing experience especially having the studio in my home in the beginning.

Today, we feel fortunate to have the internet and social media to help communicate with student’s homework assignments and lesson plans and art related events.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Shu Chih Art Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
We are an afterschool enrichment program in art. We introduce & teach traditional observational drawing and painting to students from age 5 to adults.

Our studio is proud to offer quality lesson plans that allow individual expression within the principles and elements of art and design. We also hold an annual art show, have an outdoor sketch trip, and visit the local museums every summer.

I have 30 years of experience working with children. Children can be the most patient teachers in life. I feel they have taught me how to become a better art educator by working with them. I enjoy helping them discover the talent they have already within them and help them express it.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We would like to open additional studio locations in the future.
