Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Raines.
Shirley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After losing my son, I was left broken and searching for a purpose in life. The first time I volunteered to help people living on the street, my life’s mission became clear. I saw these broken people and thought oh my God, they are just like me. I’ve been committed to serving this community ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle was recognizing that the level of need in the community is so great and not having the ability to help everyone. We are very grateful to have grown an amazing social media family who donates regularly but even today, there are so many who we aren’t able to help.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We provide hot food, hygiene items, clothes and beauty treatments to the homeless but we are most known for giving hairstyles and makeovers to the homeless via the sidewalk salon we set up every Saturday in Skidrow. I’m most proud of the family I’ve built with the homeless, our social media following and our volunteers.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck, I believe that life happens as it is supposed to and how we respond to that is growth.
