Today we’d like to introduce you to Shireen Jamehdor.
Hi Shireen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I made the decision to go to fashion school, I knew I wanted to have my own label someday, and I also knew I wanted it to be high-end and eco-friendly. What I didn’t know is that my label would end up specializing in uniforms. Over the last 15 years, I’ve worked for several uniform companies, mostly medical, and it’s actually made me a bit uniform obsessed (not just about scrubs and lab coats, but all types of uniforms). It has been a dream of mine to create a brand that reflects my values and combines all my experience as an artist and designer. Now that dream is finally becoming a reality through Art Of Uniformity®–creating beautiful uniform style that puts people and planet first.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey so far has been like driving down a freeway covered in potholes in a hurricane with 1/4 tank of gas. In other words, it’s been really freaking hard and stressful. I always knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but I had no idea just how hard it would be. There are so many moving parts when creating an apparel line from scratch and so many things that can and will go wrong every step of the way. Throw a pandemic in the mix and you no longer know what sleep is. But despite all of the craziness I’ve experienced since I started the brand, it’s really rewarding to see how far things have come. I always remind myself of the bigger picture and the purpose behind what I’m trying to achieve with AOU.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Art Of Uniformity®?
When you buy clothes, do you know what inspired the design? What the story is behind it? In fast fashion culture, it’s nearly impossible to know because to the companies making the garments, it’s just another SKU added to the mix of hundreds of others that are produced strictly for profit. Fast fashion’s intent is to get you addicted to buying stuff you don’t need and probably don’t even want (we’ve all bought things just because they were “cheap” and then end up hanging in our closet with the tags still on months later). Art Of Uniformity’s approach to fashion is completely different.
Our intent is to make premium, eco-friendly styles that withstand fashion trends and tell unique stories. The styles can be mixed and matched with the rest of your wardrobe to create endless styling possibilities. Our core collections include medical uniforms, artwear uniforms, graphic tees, classic basics and accessories–all made from a variety of natural, recycled, organic and/or upcycled materials. We also have a recycling program that allows our customers to send us their old clothes in exchange for a discount on their next AOU purchase. In addition to our sustainability efforts, social impact is also very important to the brand. We have an Art for Charity program where select prints of my original paintings are available for purchase in which 20% of proceeds go toward a different charity.
