Meet Shi Yanyi of Shaolin Temple Kung Fu Center in Rancho Cucamonga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shi Yanyi.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a 34th generation of Shaolin monk from Shaolin Temple, China. Since young age, I was inspired by the teaching of Chan Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu, and so I attended Shaolin Temple China to learned both Chan (Zen Buddhism) and Shaolin Kung Fu.

Chan Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu practice can help improve your body and channel more peace into your heart, which lead to healthy mind and body. I always encourage our students to have positive attitude and more spirit in the class which are very important aspects when practicing Shaolin Kung Fu.

During 2008-2010, I was one of the monks selected by the Temple to participate in Shaolin Temple Cultural Exchange program to travel around the world to promote Shaolin Kung Fu and Chan Buddhism by performing at various countries with the famous choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui the show called “sutra.”

2011, I came to assist Master Yanxu at Shaolin Temple Cultural Center at Temple City promoting Shaolin Kung Fu in the US. I spent 5 years here teaching Kung Fu and learn to speak English. I practice my English with my students, they really helped me a lot.

In 2016, with the approval of Shaolin Temple Abbot Shi Yongxin, I decided to introduce Shaolin Kung Fu to the greater Los Angeles area and found that Rancho Cucamonga is the right place for my first studio.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At the beginning, it was a bit challenging because we were the first Shaolin Kung Fu studio in the Inland Empire area. Therefore, we had to try to educate and let people learn about what is Shaolin Kung Fu. We offered free trial classes to everyone so they can get an idea what it is that we offer.

Shaolin Temple Kung Fu Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We teach traditional Shaolin Kung Fu which is being practiced by monks in the Shaolin Temple China. Shaolin Kung Fu can be traced back 1,500 years ago. So it is very special in a way that Kung Fu forms are effective methods for keeping your body and mind in harmony and being healthy both inside and out.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Training the students and sharing my experience and knowledge to them and see them improving every day is a big reward, especially when students discover that learning Kung Fu has benefitted them in some ways and that they are more motivated and wanting to come to practice on a regular basis.
