Meet Sheryl Contreras of The Hair Loft in Fullerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheryl Contreras.

Sheryl, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started doing hair 13 years ago. For 7 years, I worked for the same salon. You could say I was comfortable, but not happy. 4 years ago, I was taken off work after I caught someone while she passed out and herniated every disc in my neck and back on the left side. After calling OSHA, I learned we were all being poisoned with the deadly form of black mold growing in the AC unit. I then learned I had severe liver and kidney damage. I was out of work for over a year when I turned on the news one morning and realized my best friend of 23 years had died tragically. In a moment of desperation, I went to work for a friend who was managing a chain salon. I then became comfortable again until my life fell apart after a really bad break up with a very abusive alcoholic and a cancer scare in the same month. While being on leave for a surgery, my boss decided to demote and transfer me 10 miles away. I tried to adjust, but couldn’t put up with anymore drama and that was when I started making my dream a reality. I just adopted the “it’s either going to kill me or make me stronger” mentality and at that point I didn’t care which one happened. Now 6 months later, my whole life is positive and I am 100% happy with my whole life. It is a leap of faith, but you gain so much peace of mind and that is priceless!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nope! It is trial and error of finding what works for you. Finding the balance between work and home was really hard. Paying my business bills, plus my personal bills was also difficult and took creative thinking. Plus, figuring out the best for sale of advertising and marketing without spending a fortune. Let me tell you, social media is a blessing!

Please tell us about The Hair Loft.
I specialize in everything, lol. I love my education and I am constantly learning new cutting, color and styling techniques. Recently I was certified in hair extensions. The one thing I care about the most is the health of the client’s hair.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. I appreciate every lesson learned!
