Meet Sherman Oaks Makeup Artist & Hairstylist: Tracey Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracey Taylor.

Tracey, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my Career in San Diego where I grew up and knew if I was going to do this there was only one place to go so I moved to in Los Angeles in 1992. It was pre-internet so I took my portfolio to all the top modeling agencies and started doing test shoots, meeting photographers and building my business. Looking back I can’t believe its been 24 years. The time just flew by! I cannot express how much I love what I do. I became a Beauty educator 9 years ago and teach master classes to other artists and private clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t always easy. When I moved to LA I didn’t know anyone here and it was pre-internet so the only way to meet clients was to knock on doors. It was rough and there were lean times for sure. But I would not have it any other way. It taught me so much.

When you look back, can you point to a period when you wanted to quit or a period that was really frustrating?
Yes! There are no guarantees starting in maintaining your own small business . Many times I would wake up in the middle of the night my heart pounding and saying to myself “what am I doing?” I wasn’t sure how I was going to do this and be successful I just believed somehow it would work out and I could do this. It’s what I love to do and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else .

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
Always continue your education . if your call time is 9 am be set up and ready to work at 9. Work with fellow artists every chance you can. I can’t tell you how much I learn from colleagues just by working alongside them. They will inspire you! And above all Love what you do!

What are you most excited about these days?
I’m excited I am able to do what I love every day. I know how lucky I am and I strive to continue to build my business. Personally, I’m excited about so many things I love to volunteer for local charities I’m involved in. Travel is my other passion. Learning about other cultures and exploring this amazing planet we live on.
