Meet Sherman Ng of Salt Media & Entertainment in Brentwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherman Ng.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I come from a finance background, spending time in Private Banking and Investment banking. I decided to take a break in 2012 as I felt that my personal life was in a mess. During the break, I spent time on relationship and working through personal issues of identity and self-worth. While doing so, a few friends asked if I could help them produce a film.

That process of learning the space took a while, but in 2015, doors were opened and I managed to bring some financing to help get the film green lit. Subsequent to that, I managed to get involved in several other projects in Southeast Asia as well as in Hollywood.

Learning that while producing is fun and important, distribution held a key toward the success of a film. In 2017, an opportunity came to start a distribution business. Since then, we have built up our library for distribution and are continuing to build that up. The company grew quickly and in 2018, another opportunity came for us to run a cinema in the financial district of Singapore. We took hold of that opportunity and now run a 227-seater, 4K laser projector, Dolby 7.1 sound system, enabled cinema. The first cinema in the financial district of Singapore. We are looking to expand this concept in the regions.

In today’s world, you almost certainly cannot do anything without going digital. Hence come 2020, we will launch our own streaming service.

All that we do subscribe to the brand values as well as the niche market we target. Our brand is for wholesome, values-based entertainment.

The journey was and still is tough, but I find joy in what we do. My faith is an anchor for wisdom and strength to carry on the journey.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most certainly is a tough road not unlike every entrepreneur. The first struggle was convincing people that media & entertainment was a viable business. Then the harder part, convincing people that values-based, wholesome entertainment can be appealing. In a road less traveled, the journey is always lonely.

The other difficulty initially was learning to filter through the business propositions that came along. Starting out, you taste every dish on the table. Then you take everything with a pinch of salt. Overtime, you know your taste preference. That journey was a fun one, developing your taste profile while at the same not trying not to get diarrhea.

Please tell us about Salt Media & Entertainment.
Salt Media & Entertainment focuses on and is known for values-based wholesome entertainment. We produce, distribute and exhibit such content.

Not so much to be proud of at the moment, but certainly as a young company, we do our best to punch above our weight.

We believe that not only do we associate ourselves with values-based content, we also hold those values intimately as a company. We honour our stakeholders, employees and people around us. We believe in hard work and staying humble as we do it.

We’re a small simple company hoping to make an impact to our audience and the people we work with.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Spending time with my dad, going swimming and shooting paper aeroplanes from our balcony.
