Meet Shelly Tedghi of Bella Bakes in Tarzana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Tedghi.

Shelly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My whole life I absolutely loved all things SUGAR! I never in a million years had any idea I would be doing it for a living though. Before Bella Bakes I was working a 9-5 as a sales representative in an office, I was getting really bored and wanted to do something I enjoyed and let me be creative, so I enrolled in an eight month baking program. Fast forward to August 2017 and I had graduated from the program, I still had no intention of owning my own business at this point, just wanted to have something fun I can do with my time. I made my Instagram account so I can just share photos of my desserts. All of a sudden I had people start asking me to make cakes for them! Around January 2018 is when Bella Bakes really took off, I noticed my followers were increasing dramatically month by month. I was able to quit my office job this past October and focus solely on my baking. I don’t promote or advertise my desserts anywhere except Instagram which is still crazy when I think about it!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far I can luckily say it has been a smooth road. There will be some weeks where I completely overbook myself and think to myself “omg, how can I possibly be doing this all on my own?!” It definitely gets stressful at times, but the end result is so worth it!

Please tell us about Bella Bakes.
I am a baker that specializes mostly in cakes and macarons, however, I do make plenty of other desserts such as cupcakes, cream puffs, and pavlovas! I would say I am known for my style of cakes; they are very flirty and elegant, I love you using gold leaf and edible flowers on almost everything.

I also love making over the top desserts, so when people see it they are like “wow, I gotta have that” I’m probably most proud of the fact that there aren’t a lot of LA-based bakers that do cakes the same style as me, don’t get me wrong there are a lot of bakers in my area which I absolutely love and look up to, but my style definitely has a signature look to it.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Going to Rite-aid with my mom after school and getting their Rainbow Sherbet ice cream! Still love it till this day!
