Meet Shayenne Huff of All Tressed Up Blowdry & Beauty Bar in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayenne Huff.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My mom was a stylist growing up and I had gone to school/was working in fashion and business. We always knew we wanted to open a business together but weren’t sure what. We had the idea to open a one stop hair and makeup spot and the ball started rolling. We opened our first location in Palm Desert, in 2012. I grew up in the desert, so we decided that it would be best to open in our backyard where we knew the clientele and knew how season worked there. About a year and a half in, we decided to start looking for an LA location. We opened our 2nd location in 2014 in the Westlake Village area. We have always done On The Go services where we come to you for private clientele as well as events for the music festivals, Fashion Week, Bridal, photoshoots etc. but have really streamlined the process for our everyday client since closing our Westlake location. We will be launching our app to make booking On The Go even simpler.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely been a wild ride since opening our first location in 2012. Many of the struggles we face are due to us trying to where all the hats. We are definitely control freaks from making sure our salons are exceptionally clean and relaxing, to the best customer service and matching quality of services to the branding of the company and marketing almost to the point where it holds us back. Our biggest struggle has been learning to let go and hire accordingly so that we are able to utilize our personal skills and experience the best we can. The blow-dry and beauty bar industry is still fairly new so we have had lots of challenges in staffing as well.

All Tressed Up Blowdry & Beauty Bar – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a blow-dry and beauty bar. We like to think of ourselves as the one stop shop for express luxury services. Our most popular services are blow-drying and regular full face makeup applications. We do offer updos, braids, dry styles, airbrushed makeup, and faux lashes as well! I’m most proud of how selective we are when staffing (almost to the point of being understaffed most of the time which is a HUGE challenge we face all the time) and the family like team that we have built. We do not compromise on quality just to get more stylists in our doors. I think what sets us apart is the fact that it is so important to us to keep it personal and intimate. I, personally, think it’s so important to great clients by their name as soon as they walk through the front door, have their favorite beverage at their chair, with their preferred stylist ready to go and make sure that they get the most out of their time in my salon.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think an eye-opening experience for us regarding success was when we closed our Westlake Village location recently. The out pour of kind words and the void that was apparent in the community really showed us that our efforts were so valued. Although it wasn’t ideal, it meant a lot to us to know that we were such a part of the community. We are in the process of finding a center that is a better fit for our brick and mortar in the area.
