Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay Lewis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a Singer-Songwriter from Detroit, Mi. I’ve been singing since I was a child but started pursuing music professionally when I was 18. Freshman year of College is where I found my passion for songwriting.
I started recording, and the rest was history. I started uploading music (if not full tracks, interludes) on Soundcloud everytime my birthday came around. From there, I came out with two singles, “Perfect” ft G-3 and “Wanna Be.” After receiving great feedback and performing both singles, I felt like I was ready to come out with an EP. I released my first EP titled “Everything” May 2017. I had alot of fun writing, recording, and promoting my 1st project.
After it’s release the same year, I decided that I was ready for a change of scenery. In November of 2017, I moved to LA by myself. The first year was a shock because I had to start over. I had no friends or family here, but I knew in heart that I was supposed to make this drastic move. Musically, I didn’t just want to work with anyone. The music business can be extremely shady, and I couldn’t jump into any situation and work with just anyone.
In June of 2018, BET Network held an audition for singers, actors, and models. I received a callback from one of the talent agents on the panel and from there, they introduced me to some amazing producers who are currently helping me work on my 2nd EP. I don’t want to throw out a specific date yet, however, if everything goes as planned, look out for my dope project expected to drop late Summer of 2019.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The Music Business can be really tricky. I’ve worked with little names and big names who didn’t want to play fair. At the end of the day, I’m an independent artist who have learned a lot of lessons and those lessons have helped me avoid wasting my time. The music business has taught me to be a great listener and an even better communicator.
No matter how long I’ve been in the business, it is and will forever be a struggle working with other creators who have been through their own personal struggles. I expect the struggle now. I’m just happy I handle it alot better than I did in the past.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m a singer-songwriter. I love everything about music. I’m happiest when I’m working on my purpose. If anything sets me apart from everyone else, it’s my experiences. The tough part about writing about my experiences is actually trying to relate it to everyone else lol.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My definition of success is financially supporting yourself while fulfilling your purpose. If you’re doing what makes you happy and it’s helping you financially, you have won! That is #Goals
