Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Powers.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shawn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Lonnie, one of my Co-Founders has a god-sister (Makresha Mcfashion) who rents out her home for parties and such. About 7 years ago she asked us to do massages at a few of her parties. Eventually, clients of hers started requesting that we do events for them too. Her husband noticed this and recommended that we take this venture seriously and call ourselves MANLY HANDZ. We loved the idea. We loved the name. We just didn’t quite know how much work would be ahead of us.
The three of us founders (Lonnie, Shawn & Eddie) gave our selves 1yr to get the requirements necessary to get things going (Training, obtaining a business license, finding our supplies, etc.). Luckily for us, the phone calls and clients started coming in around the same time, which created a little buzz for us. Since then we’ve been featured on T.V. Shows, in Magazines and on Broadcast Radio ETC. We are truly grateful to have come a long way since massaging in the backyard of Lonnie’s God-Sisters home.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have been obstacles, twists and turns to our story. Some of the challenges have been finding reliable retailers for equipment and supplies. Getting loyal and respectful team members who fit our brand and code of conduct is another challenge. We also have to keep our team fully uniformed at all times, which means replacing them regularly so they don’t look too worn out. There are also a ton of headaches that come with being a mobile service. Sometimes you have to multitask and think on your feet, but its all worth it for us.
Manly Handz Experience Mobile Spa – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a complete Mobile Spa and we travel anywhere bringing the types of treatments you’d normally find at a traditional spa such as reflexology of the hands and feet, shoulder/neck massages, as well as full body massages. We come to clients homes, churches, offices, art galleries, gardens, movie theaters, backstage at concerts, etc. and we set up a Spa Experience including spa chairs, fancy towels, waterfall, roses petals music and ambiance.
We are professional, respectful, honest, punctual and great company for both ladies and gentlemen (we hire both Male and Female therapists). No occasion is too big or too small, birthday parties, baby showers, retreats and book club meetings are typical spa events for us. We’ve even been hired to travel out of state for spa events, which makes us super proud.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to us is having a great team, as well as satisfied new and repeat clients. However, it would be awesome to franchise having newer Manly Handz Therapists working at all the high-end hotels, casinos and relaxing destinations worldwide. That would be the ultimate success.
