Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Harmon.
Shawn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a 19 year old actor and photographer from Phoenix, Arizona, I moved to Los Angeles in July of 2019 and have been navigating the LA world since. I was always involved in sports from when I was 4 and all the way up until my senior year of high school so I never had the chance to do Drama. During my senior year I got pneumonia during football season and I could only play video games and watch movies. I always wanted to act but never got the chance. While watching one of my favorite movies The Dark Knight, I paused it and looked up acting classes near me. I found a school in Scottsdale and after convincing my parents, I was able to give acting a shot and I loved it. I actually loved it so much that a month after I graduated high school, I left Arizona and moved to Los Angeles. So far in the nine months I’ve been here, I have auditioned so many times and have been told no so many times… but also yes a few times. I found a new class out in LA, been cast in a wide variety of student films, short films, and a few features. I also found a manager (David Firestone), and I’ve been in a global pandemic, but I can’t wait for the entertainment industry to reopen safely and at the right time so we can get back to doing what I love.
Has it been a smooth road?
So far its been a roller coaster. The highs and lows of this industry is something that you have to be in it to know about, but like most actors have said there are so many no’s and it really discourages you, but then one yes can make five months of eating one meal a day and living off nothing feel so worth it. I’ve also had to learn a lot on the spot which has been pretty easy with some great actors, directors, and crew on all the sets I’ve been on. I’m still new and make rookie mistakes, but getting over those mistakes in the moment and resetting is really hard.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an actor and that’s what I wanna do, I am technically a business I guess, but I’m more in it for the actual craft and getting out of my own shoes. I really love to nail a character and kinda be someone else for a little bit and that’s what makes me really proud of what I’m doing. I also do photography, I love to take photos of me, my friends, or whatever I’m seeing that looks cool in the moment. What makes me different from everybody else, I wanna be like everybody else, I love myself don’t get me wrong, but I have this weird passion to work from 8 am to 11 pm on a character that could or couldn’t be real, and I wanna try every single way to be like that person and I’d say that’s what sets me apart from others.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There’s so much I love about LA. One thing always stands out to me whether hiking on runyon canyon or just getting back into town is the skyline, as soon as you see it you know you’re in LA. What I dislike most, traffic is pretty bad haha.
