Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaneisha Dodson.
Hi Shaneisha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Around 2012, I founded my company Black Girlz Productions (BGP). My goal was to see my words come to life so I wrote, directed, and produced my first stage play. Ten years later, we are still in business. BGP produces short films and plays. Our productions have won numerous awards and have toured around the United States.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Our journey was full of ups and downs. When I founded the company, I hit numerous hurdles from dealing with janky promoters to venues not wanting to rent to us because we were a new company.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have written numerous plays, monologues, and films. Writing has always been a passion of mine. I found my love for writing in high school. I had to write a narrative and had three opportunities to improve my score. Each time I earned a perfect. I wrote about my uncle and his car that he nicknamed “Martha Ann.”
From there, I fell in love with the idea of creating characters and worlds that were opposite to who I am as a person. I am known for being a playwright. I’m proud to create work that brings about social change. My integrity and resilience set me apart from other people in my field.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
They may not know that I’m working on my third short film. It’s a coming-of-age love story set in Louisiana.
