Today we’d like to introduce you to Shané Johnson.
Hi Shané, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Washington D.C. and started dancing at the age of three. I started training in Ballet, Tap, Jazz and African dance and Theatre. I attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts and studied Ballet pointe Modern Hiphop and African dance. I was fortunate enough to attend dance conferences nationally and internationally training with dance pioneers from many backgrounds. I attended University of the Arts majoring in Dance Performance with a concentration in Ballet. Senior year, I joined two Contemporary Ballet companies and then accepted a dance contract for Princess Cruise Line. Later on, I taught at many dance institutes and was the dance educator at a middle school while continuing to perform professionally. I will say with the support and encouragement from my family, I was able to accomplish my dreams.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been 100% of a smooth road and here’s why…..rejection! No one likes to be rejected from an audition but that should be one of the reasons why we persevere. Always being prepared is important and working on your craft daily may consume a lot of our time but at the end, it always brings astounding results. There’s something in store for everyone as long as we continue to work hard!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional dancer and model currently living out my dreams in the Las Vegas area. I’m a dance instructor and my favorite part about being an instructor is creating. My specialty dance styles are Contemporary, Heels Performance, and Jazz Funk. I’ve performed in residencies on the strip in Las Vegas, performed in musicals, commercials, music videos and more. I’ve also modeled in clothing brands and apparel, have done many promotional model gigs and runway fashion shows. I’m mostly proud of the decision to go back to school to get my Master in Arts Management. In this program, I’ll be learning the ins and outs of how to run an arts organization and with that, I plan to give back to the community through entertainment. I want to direct shows, festivals, concerts, films and more! I’m an energy-based and easy-going kind of person and love working with others and collaborating creative ideas.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been pretty active as a child. After school, we’re always dance classes. I spent a lot of hours in the studio so what I enjoyed mostly when I wasn’t training was simply going to the movies with friends! I also loved traveling and going on vacations visiting beaches, swimming, theme parks and shopping and none of that has changed! I still enjoy doing these things.
