Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaden Abboushi.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shaden. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out working as an assistant in entertainment, honestly because I loved live music and wanted to see if I could turn that into a career. I would recommend a couple years right out of college as an assistant, its incredible training.
After three years in LA, I received a job offer based out of Utah and took a leap of faith. The job ended up being incredible, I learned so much about myself and the hospitality industry during my time there. I basically networked for two years straight, on hyper-drive. During that time an investor friend of mine put me in touch with the head of an up and coming directly to consumer mattress company. I was offered a job running their LA operations and headed back west.
For a while there I was discouraged in the lack of cohesiveness within my career. I thought to myself, have I bounced around industries too much? But then along came Bumble and everything fell into place.
I am currently on the marketing team at Bumble and could not be happier with where I have landed. I get to tap into all my experience from entertainment, hospitality, events, and tech. And the best part about it is that its a female-led company, with an empowering mission to end misogyny that I am so proud to stand behind and work towards.
Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! Anyone who tells you otherwise is surely bluffing. Of course, there were times of self-doubt, of not knowing if you’ve made the right choice. It’s easy to be hard on yourself and harp on the mistakes made. But now that I’m a little more seasoned, I dwell less and focus on how best to move forward in any given situation.
It’s also not physically easy to work hard and put in those long hours. Input dictates output so that was definitely a struggle along the way, the early morning and late nights, without any immediate gratification. Just stick with it and trust that all that energy won’t go unnoticed.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work for the social networking app Bumble, which connects you to people in your area that you may not know or meet otherwise. Our mission is to end misogyny by putting women in control of the conversation, and in essence, their lives. I could not be more in love with everything that we stand for.
We have a zero-tolerance policy for bad behavior or language on the app, and that culture is why our users feel safe and empowered. Our values are rooted in kindness, inclusivity, and creating and equal playing field for every person.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes absolutely! And actually Bumble has a version within the app designed specifically for networking purposes. If someone is just starting out I would absolutely give BumbleBizz a try. Use it to meet as many people as possible in the industry of interest to you. You never know where one encounter could lead!
