Meet Shad Loh of Vegin’ Out in Lincoln Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shad Loh.

Shad, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As I was going through some major transitions with my personal life. Found myself surrounded by vegan friends as support by chance. Eventually stopped consuming meat as a result. Then noticed that my period cramps and constipation completely gone. Did some testing on myself to make sure that it is the food that I have been consuming that is changing my condition.

After testing for four months with one month eating some meat and the next no meat consumption, doing this process twice, I am convinced that meat was the cause. During the same time, I took a four years hiatus from work. Then one day, as I was looking through the internet since I was ready to get back to work again, I saw a listing for Vegin’ Out for sale. I very much sold on the idea of not eating meat. I like what Vegin’ Out is offering which is a weekly vegan meal delivery service. I purchased the business with the goal of helping others who are interested in eating healthy plant-based food go through an easier transition. When I took over Vegin’ Out there were not too many meal delivery services like mine. It is not easy to transition from eating meat to plant-based especially when you are not surrounded by vegan friends like I did.

Vegin’ Out started with just a regular vegan meal plan for the week to now oil-free, low sodium and low sugar. With the proliferation of what I call junk vegan food out there, lots of deep-frying, processed fake meats, etc…I realized that being vegan is not always healthy. If I want to help someone transition into a plant-based diet, I want to help them through a healthy and delicious way not through deep-fried vegan food. I was fortunate enough to meet Dr Hung (an internal medicine doctor) and Claudia Del Vecchio (a certified nutritionist) over a year ago who were able to help me tweak my vegan meals and still keep the taste into oil-free, low sodium and low sugar. They also helped me created the vegan soup and juice cleanse, the blood sugar control and the low carb vegan meal plan. The original idea for these meals were to help their patients. A lot of the weight management programs out there are not effective because there’s a lack of follow through program for the clients. With these new healthy vegan meal plan, these people are now able to effectively change their diet. Well at least it is a resource to help them transition and not lose sight of their weight management goals.

This is what I am truly excited about to be able to now truly provide healthy vegan food to everyone. I am happy to share that some of my clients reported that they’ve lost weight and kept it off with our vegan meals after trying so many different meal plans. I’ve one client who told me that her son’s cholesterol dropped from 286 to 105 after eating our food for three months. His doctor was going to put him on cholesterol controlled medication before the diet change.

This is what she wrote: Did you know my son who is 20 was told by a cardiologist that he needed to go on a statin because his cholesterol was 286. I told that doctor to let me take control of his diet. My son has been eating your food for three months and when retested two weeks ago, his cholesterol is now 105! He also went from 245 down to 202; that’s a whopping 43lbs!!

Thank you… I consider you guys family!!!

This is the kind of stuff that really excites me and that I am able to make a difference. My goal and hope is to continue to help as many people like this client as I can.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a business is never a smooth road. In fact we are running into some struggles now. We have a team that could fulfill twice as many orders, however, with the introduction of the well-funded venture backed meal prep companies that offers the service for half the costs has cannibalized our sales. The increased popularity of the meal prep service also created a lot more smaller meal prep companies that operate out of their home kitchen. Since there’s no way for the health department to check on these smaller home kitchen style meal prep companies, the barrier to entry is almost non existence.

Vegin’ Out – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am really proud that we are able to provide healthy vegan meals to our clients. It is easy to cook food using lots of salt, seasoning, preservatives, frying, etc. However, providing delicious vegan meals while keeping it healthy is difficult. I am very happy to say that we are doing just that. I can truly say that our meals are different and set us apart. We are oil-free, low sodium, low sugar but still keeping the flavors and tastes. Eating healthy vegan food is easy with our meals.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment of my career is actually when I used to run an internet marketing company in San Diego between 1998 – 2009. I started that internet marketing company along with my then partner from bootstrap and grew to a $20 million per year revenue. All by ourselves, no investors. I have learned so much from that experience. But now I am in a different stage of my career whereby I choose to do something I really love and can change lives.
