Meet Seung Mi Jeong of SJ Photography in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seung Mi Jeong.

Seung Mi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been into art since I was little; I enjoyed drawing using various art mediums. Then in my early 20’s I got a job with a company that wanted me to take photos in their studio. That was the first time I used a camera for photography and started taking photos. I felt that through photography, I could express myself and my art. I kept studying on my own on my free time. On my days off, I would go around the city and shoot to practice. Until one day people asked me to photograph them. I’ve done shootings for weddings, parties, and even personal profile photos. I was surprised to learn that I could express my view of art through them when I edited photos.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been particularly difficult for me because I’m naturally shy when meeting new people. So often people say I’m quiet or not interesting or boring at times. But I am a person of few words. Being shy and quiet made it difficult for me to speak out on unfair situations. At one point, I was the assistant photographer to a more well-known wedding photographer. It became obvious he liked my style of shooting and would claim it as his own on his social media without crediting me. As much as I wanted to gain more experience and practice, it became a stressful situation at the time. So I had no choice but to terminate the working relationship. However, this led me to open my own business and work on my own.

Please tell us about SJ Photography.
My business is not just taking photographs and editing them. I am grateful to the people that hire me and give them 110% dedication to meeting their expectations. My specialty is working with natural lights and capturing those moments people don’t pay attention to.
