Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth VBDC.
Seth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born in 76, I grew up in NYC, raised to rock and roll and rap music. I started producing albums independently in 1992, playing local dives and handing out demo cassettes.
Fast forward 40 years and I worked my way to LA, through grueling kitchen work and worse, and found a home for my heart in Venice. Along the way, I never gave up on the musical dream, but my reasons for making music changed dramatically.
My fantasies about playing to adoring crowds and posing on red carpets have been replaced with a desire to create something positive for the younger generations. I’ve discovered that music is a special way to communicate with people and we should be thoughtful with what we say because the young and impressionable are listening.
I am currently working hard to complete the first Venice Beach Dub Club album and to make it something special. It’s a culmination of a lifetime of musical influences and experiences.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing worth doing is done easily. I’ve been completely derailed from my musical mission multiple times and for years at a time by poverty, family tragedy and self-doubt. I’ve reached a point where I am so thankful for how I allowed to spend my time now, creating and playing music, that it’s impossible to regret the roadblocks. In fact, the obstacles have taught me the most important lessons of my life and given me plenty to write about.
Please tell us about Venice Beach Dub Club.
Venice Beach Dub Club is not a normal Reggae band. Our music is inspired by every form of music from rap to country, from rock to rave. We play every style of Reggae but in our own way. Above all, we refuse to compromise on the content of our lyrics. We make strictly righteous, positive and uplifting songs. We don’t engage in any profanity and we don’t promote any harmful activities or lifestyles. We aim to never be proud but rather pleased. We are pleased that we have the freedom and opportunity to make this kind of music, albeit not in popular demand. It is truthful and heartfelt and we can hang our hats on that no matter where it goes from here.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would never start over. I regret nothing and wouldn’t even take a time machine for a test drive. Maybe I just have to learn things the hard way…and it has been hard but I have indeed learned. A direct path to success would have had me writing more of the vapid, meaningless music currently in oversupply. I have a lot of physical and mental scars but each one of them is a potential song.
