Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Rangel.
Sergio, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At the age of 17, I joined the United States Army with hopes of pursuing my original dream of becoming a DEA agent. After experiencing war and seeking advice from other agents I decided not to pursue my DEA dream, I wanted a family and something a little more safe. After my honorable discharge from the U.S Army, I received an opportunity in the electrical field. A few years went by when I decided that I could create my own success and I did not want pass up the opportunity to create my very own business. Veteran Electrical Power Systems was founded in 2013. I started this business with all my savings and the will to want to create something big for my future. The name Veteran Electrical Power systems came from my own personal experience being a Veteran and allowing potential customers know what we specialize in. In 2013, when I first began VEPS, I operated the business out of my garage with one employee, a whole lot of determination and tunnel vision. Today, 5 years later, Veteran Electrical has 20+ employees with 2 locations, Headquarters in Burbank and an additional office in San Diego.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A lot of struggles have come along the way. First off, was capital. In the Electrical Engineering and Testing industry a simple test set can cost over 40 thousand dollars. Today we have more than a million in inventory to be prepared for any project that comes in.
Second, was manpower. Due to the complexity of the projects having one additional person to assist in projects it was a scheduling act in which many cases we had to work for 24 hours straight to ensure we were maintaining the company’s reputation and always putting the client first. As time passed the acquisition of Key Employees ease that stress in which gave us the versatility to perform multiple projects in a 24 hour day.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Veteran Electrical Power Systems (VEPS) specializes in electrical preventative and predictive services. As a service disabled veteran owned business, VEPS deals with government, commercial, and industrial entities providing electrical services ranging from 240 Volts to 230KV.
We are most known for Emergency service, when a client calls for an issue we put their needs first to assure that the power to the facility is restored. We are most proud of our reputation and the trust high end clients have in our firm. For a company so new, we currently have ongoing projects year after year with some of the Nation’s top Hospitals, entertainment venues and facilities throughout Southern CA up to Seattle.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I played sports and was more of the class clown. Always looking for a way to make those around me smile. I was very eager to begin to make my own path in life. I joined the Army on my 17th birthday which took about 3 months for my parents to sign as I was under age, but I always had a plan for my life. The plan diverted from being a DEA Special Agent which I pursued at a young age to Electrical Engineering after a project working for Chevron in the Wafra Fields in Kuwait. That opportunity alone opened my eyes, to the possibilities of how my world and those around me could increase if I choose that as my career path.
