Meet Sergio and Alyssa Amalfitano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio and Alyssa Amalfitano.

Hi Sergio and Alyssa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We started off as a married couple of DJs that created soul nights around The Valley and Los Angeles. It was an all vinyl group and we slowly started adding pop up stores to the events with our doubles and curated selection. I was already running my own silkscreen business so I created our graphics and merchandise as well. Eventually, we just wanted to be able to have a space where we could play music and provide curated music selections as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Covid definitely made things more difficult. Processing paperwork and permits took a very long time. Juggling school for our stay at home kids while trying to open and work other jobs was a challenge. We (my wife and I) contracted covid right before opening up and had to postpone for an entire month. We both had to go to the hospital several times and get IV’ed. Eventually, we got better and pushed forward as best we could having lost time and being hurt financially from not working. Thankfully the community of San Fernando and Southern California has really supported us.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We’ve basically been involved in music for the last 20 years. From being in bands, djing, silkscreening for fellow bands, photography at live events, graphics design work, booking events, working doors, etc. We’ve always approached all of our “work” as very DIY and ultimately done out of love and a hard work ethic vs just an interest in money.

What were you like growing up?
We both grew up involved and surrounded by punk music. So we shared a very rebellious, anti-authoritarian outlook (so we always disliked bosses). That lent itself well to us being creative and self-sustaining types. We’re also both somewhat nerdy and obsessive. We collect movies, comics, records, cassettes, memorabilia, etc. The store is basically just an extension of our loves.
