Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastien Markoc.
Hi Sebastien, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started off in 2005 working for an architecture agency in Paris that did some of the first five-star hotels. I worked my way up from handling deliveries to project supervisor when I was 25. I spent 4 years there and learnt all about how projects go from an idea on paper to reality. But my real passion was always in interior design, and I wanted to work my own projects. I decided to venture on my own in 2012 and created my own agency which was specialized in interior design and renovation. It was such an exciting time of my life to finally design my own concepts! I decided I would specialize in residential projects and worked on more and more ambitious renovations. I ended up doing over 50 projects! When my husband was relocated to Los Angeles in 2020, I decided to continue by setting up my own interior design and renovation company in LA. I’ve been working here since and focusing on residential projects, from condos that need renovating to single family homes in Beverly Hills. It’s been a very exciting time, and the US has certainly opened up a lot of new opportunities!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, it’s been a smooth ride. I met some great clients, both in Paris and LA, who trusted me with their projects and made me want to deliver. This said, there have definitely been challenges along the way. The biggest ones were moving to a new country with a different culture and habits in the world of interior design and Covid, which happened just when I wanted to grow a new business in LA.
We’ve been impressed with Sebastien Markoc LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My agency specializes in interior renovation and decoration from start to finish, designing a unique concept fitted to my client’s needs, preparing plans, finding the right materials, selecting the contractor and providers, and assisting my clients until each project is delivered. I specialize both in interior design and renovation, anything from a condo that needs a new kitchen and custom-made furniture to an old house from the 1970s which needs to be gutted and fully renovated. I take pride in treating each project like a unique concept. Even though there are styles and trends that I like, I never do the same project twice. I always try to find what can set a project apart and make it stand out. I love working with my clients to understand their needs and, most importantly, how they want to use the space they live in. It’s essential because I’m a strong believer that design shouldn’t be just aesthetic, but it should really answer the question: “What will this space be used for?”. It’s something that I know my clients appreciate about me.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think the most important quality as an interior designer is to be able to understand your client’s needs and, at the same time, have a clear vision to transform their needs into something unique. It’s that balance that makes a project successful.
